Lag in online gameplay is caused by excessive latency between players' computers which can cause frozen and errattic movements of game graphics, and also "warping" speed changes. Sometimes damage or kills will not show up exactly when you expect them to. These effects indicate that not all packets, the unit of data which is transferred between computers, are being transmitted and/or processed in a timely manner. Lagging can be caused by packets getting lost or delayed intransit, and also by a users computer not being able to process or resopond to all the game data as quickly as it should. Some common causes of lag are congestion on the internet, poor connection quality, and slow processing speed of a players computer.
To reduce Lag, a computer should have: Sufficient processor speed, enough RAM, a graphics or video card, and a properly configured connection to the internet. Internet bandwidth "bottlenecks" are beyond the control of users, but are usually only temporary. Dialup connections may experience predictable congestion at the ISP, especially during peak times of use such as after work, and early evenings. Runing fewer background applications will free up more processor time, as will turning down game sound and setting all game graphics to low. If you or your opponents still experience lag, try flying with smaller groups to reduce your computers work load, and limit yourself to missions with fewer objects. Small COOPs and ABAs are fun too. An eight player FFA puts a lot of missiles, bullets, aircraft, scenery and other objects in motion, and is a sure way to bring an older computer down to 2 or 3 fps.
