What is FELSOCEM? FELSOCEM is the Latin American Federation of Scientific Societies of Medicine Students. It is a nongovernmental organization, of scientific character, nonpartisan, without profit aims, that began in 1986 in Valparaiso, CHILE, in the I South American Scientific Congress of Medical Students. There was created an international society that soon became the Federation which we know today. The Executive Committee of the federation at the moment is in Asunción, Paraguay. Objectives The main objective of the federation, is to elevate the scientific level of the predegree students, promoting the scientific research and the continuous medical education, with projection towards the community. For it, it stimulates the participation of diverse local societies to the interchange of knowledge in national events as much as international. In addition it serves as spokesman of the student scientific community before organisms that formulate policies of investigation and health in Latin America, and stimulates programs of teaching and investigation that are made in each society. Members At the moment they are members of the federation, more than 70 scientific societies of medical students of all Latin America: Paraguay, Ecuador, Guatemala, Mexico, Peru, Bolivia, Chile, Dominican Republic, Uruguay, Venezuela, Panama, Argentina, Brazil, Colombia, Costa Rica and Cuba. When a society participates for the first time is considered like associated member, and one that already belongs it is federated member. If a medical school exists that does not have constituted scientific society it can name a representative, who will be in charge of the formation of the scientific society of his/her school. Activities of FELSOCEM Federation carries out multiple activities, participates in addition in diverse events. Annually the INTERNATIONAL SCIENTIFIC CONGRESS (CCI) organized by a scientific society is made that has requested that right before the assembly of the FELSOCEM. 15 congresses have already been made, annually, this year was successfully carried out XV CCI FELSOCEM organized by the Medical Students Scientific Society of the National University of Asunción, PARAGUAY, made event from the 14 to the 18 of August of 2000. For the year 2001 our Mexican brothers will organize in Mérida, Yucatan, Mexico, the XVI CCI FELSOCEM. 4 permanent committees exist, that are in charge to develop through all the year the ideas, projects, works of greater interest than they arise during the annual assembly. Their directors are: 1. Evaluation and Scientific and Technical Development (EDECyT) 2. Integrated Care Health (AIS) 3. Medical Educación (EM) 4. International Affairs (RI) About the General Assembly It is the most important instance where they meet the directive committee with the delegates of each federated or associated scientific society and representing. The Assembly is made within the framework of each Scientific Congress, and individuals presents in his/her work made during the year, the lines of work of each Permanent Committee is discussed, the seat of the congress of the incoming year is ratified and the seat of the CCI of the subsequent year is chosen. Each delegate who is federated has right to voice and vote in the decisions of the assembly, the associate and representatives only have right to voice. To be federated each society it must present/display certain papers like list of members of the society, act of constitution, activities made during the year, list of director and other that are requested ahead of time to the congress, and in addition a sum of money is due to cancel that this year was of USD 120 by society (Annual).
