Wondering what a time capsule should be made of?
Well, there are endless possibilities for this, but there are a few things to keep in mind when choosing a capsule:

Where will I be "burying" my capsule?

Contrary to the thought, time capsules do not have to be buried in the ground.  In fact, more are lost and completely forgotten this way.  People move, and die, and the memories are lost.

An alternative to burying your capsule in the earth is to put it away somewhere in the house that is not frequented, like the attic or the basement, or even the closet.  All one has to do is find a place to keep it where opening it will not be tempting 24/7.  As they say, “Out of sight, out of mind”.  If one decides to keep a capsule in the house, almost any container will be suitable.  A plastic box/bin with a lid, a metal tin, or even a shoebox work just fine.

If one does decide to actually bury a capsule, remember that it needs to withstand good old mother earth and her children, the elements.  Do not use a metal can if the outside appearance wishes to be preserved, remember, metal rusts when it gets wet, and the ground gets wet when it rains…

But do not sacrifice beauty for durability.   A  metal can can be used, but be sure to seal the contents well.  Sealing the contents in a zip lock bag, before putting them in the capsule, can do this.  In fact, it may even be wise to use several bags in the event that the first fails.  And for those who want to have even more protection, seal the entire capsule in a bag before burying it!

What event/memory am I capturing?

Always try and keep in mind what it is being remembered with the time capsule.  Pick a container that reflects the event.  If one cannot find a container that is liked, or that goes with the specific theme, create one by decorating a plain tin or box.  The possibilities are endless when using one's imagination.  Here are a few ideas on possible containers to use as capsules:

New Baby- a diaper bag, or one of those giant plastic bottles that gifts sometimes come in

Wedding- a white, cloth, wine bag, one that gathers and ties at the top, a wine bag in small, or any type of drawstring bag that looks fairly “fancy” will work,  or a small treasure chest with a lock and key

New Job-this can vary depending on the job-a tool box for a mechanic, a briefcase for a business woman

New House/Apartment- a cookie jar or a flower pot (plastic of course)

School Memories (Kindergarten, Senior Year, ect.)-a pencil box, a three-ring binder, one that is fairly wide so that a great amount of things can fit into it
