RESEARCH ACTIVITIES
I
From 1972 to 1975, I
conducted research for a Ph.D. thesis under the supervision of Prof. J. G.
Hawkes on "The Origin and Nature of Solanum ajanhuiri Juz. et Buk., a
South American Cultivated Diploid Potato". Evidence was found showing that
S. ajanhuiri, a frost tolerant species cultivated in the high Andean
plateau between Bolivia and Peru, was originated from natural crosses
between the wild potato S. megistacrolobum and the cultivated species
S. stenotomum.
II.
From January 1976 to December 2000,
I worked at the International Potato Center (CIP), Departments of Breeding
and Genetics; Genetic Resources; and Crop Improvement and Genetic Resources,
at Headquarters in Lima - Peru. As Senior Genebank Manager, had major
responsibility in the development of the world potato and sweetpotato
genebanks. Until 1998 was responsible for the project "The Maintenance,
Distribution, Evaluation and Documentation of Potato and Sweetpotato Genetic
Resources". From 1998 to 2000 was the Project Leader for the "Conservation
and Characterization of Potato Genetic Resources".
III.
From January 2001, I initiated the activities of PROBIOANDES (Pro
Biodiversity of the Andes), a non-profit organization whose mission is “To
contribute to improve public awareness about the importance of the
conservation and sustainable use of the Biodiversity from Peru and the
preservation of their ecosystems. Our purpose is “To contribute to a more
sustainable conservation of Peruvian genetic resources by reinforcing their in
situ and ex situ conservation, and promoting market opportunities
to exotic products derived from them” and “To spread the importance of the
conservation of the ecosystems and the environment to improve the quality of
life of the Peruvian people”. The web pages are in
http://www.oocities.org/probioandes/
On May 5th 2002, I established
the Electronic Group Biodiversidad PERU, to facilitate specialized
information on issues related to the conservation and sustainable use of the
existing biodiversity in Peru. At present there are more than 800 members
subscribed.
Since June 2002 to January 2003, I collaborated in the
Coordination of the Biodiversity Area in the First International Congress of
Peruvian Scientists that took place in the Marriott Hotel in Lima, Peru from
2nd to 5th January 2003. The summaries of the
conferences presented are in
http://www.oocities.org/biodiversidad_peru/Resumenes_I_CICP_MA_2003.pdf
From May 13th to June 14th 2003, I participated in a
collecting expedition of native cottons of Peru in collaboration with
Professor Manfred Heun and his MSc student Mr. Ola T. Westengen, of the
Department of Ecology and Natural Resources Management, Agricultural
University of Norway. This expedition was made with a collecting permit
issued by INRENA, in the coastal valleys of Northern Peru and neighbouring
areas along the “jungle marginal highway” in the Departments of Cajamarca,
Amazonas and San Martin. The passport data and duplicate sets of seeds
collected were left with INIA-PRONIRGEB, and duplicates of herbarium
vouchers were deposited at the Herbarium Weberbauer at the Agrarian
University La Molina and the Herbarium Truxillense at the University of
Trujillo. The materials exported to Norway were made with a Material
Transfer Agreement between INRENA and the Agricultural University of Norway.
These materials were used to make DNA comparisons and the results are
reported in the MSc Thesis entitled
Genetic diversity and geographic pattern in early South
American cotton domestification
available at
http://wwwnlh.umb.no/ina/studier/oppgaver/2004-Westengen.pdf
On June 18th 2003, I signed a consultancy with the World
Resources Institute to facilitate the Millennium Ecosystem Assessment in
Peru (Evaluación
de Ecosistemas del Milenio en el Perú
(EEM-PERU)) and to improve the public awareness on the impact
of the change in the ecosystems on human well-being. The contract was
renewed from June 2004 to April 2005.
On June 25th 2003, I initiated the Electronic
Group Ecosystems-PERU, to distribute specialized information on issues
related to the ecosystems and the environment in Peru. At present this group
has more than 1300 subscribed members. Another important activity was the
organization of the Forum Analysis of the change on the components of the
ecosystems that affect the Peruvian quality of life, which took place at
the Agrarian University La Molina on October 23rd 2003. A total
of 21 papers were presented in this forum by leading Peruvian scientists and
embraced 26 different institutions. Additionally, I organized a Virtual
Forum from November 2003 to April 2004 with weekly conferences at several
universities in Lima. All papers presented in these events are available at
http://www.oocities.org/ecosistemas_peru/fv_agenda.htm. This group was
merged to the Electronic Group Biodiversidad PERU on February 17, 2007 and
was renamed as Electronic Group Biodiversidad-Medio
Ambiente PERU.
In attention to an invitation from the
Ethnoecology/Biodiversity Laboratory, Department of Anthropology, University
of Georgia, Athens, USA, I participated in the conference "Seeds of
resistance / Seeds of hope: Interfaces in the repatriation and In situ
conservation of traditional crops" that took place from April 30th
to May 1st 2004.
http://www.sanrem.uga.edu/sanrem/database/ppt/Seeds%20of%20Resistance.pdf
On a request by Dr. Virginia Nazarea,
Director of the Ethnoecology/Biodiversity Laboratory, Department of
Anthropology, University of Georgia, Athens, USA, I wrote in 2005 a Manual
to develop "Communal Seed Banks". This manual will be published jointly with
Dr. Nazarea.
From March to May 2006, I collaborated
with IPGRI´s staff of the Genetic Resources Policy Initiative (GRPI) and the
Peruvian Sociedad Peruana de Derecho Ambiental (SPDA) to design and
publish the Policy Information Brokerage Service (PIBS) - PERU hub. This
project aims to strengthen the capacity of developing countries to design
comprehensive policy frameworks for genetic resources. PIBS-PERU makes
available a library of Peruvian laws related to biodiversity, environmental
services, indigenous knowledge, biosafety, and intellectual property. It
also provides information on institutions and scientists working on genetic
resources activities in Peru. The web page is at
