Introduction
I'll preface this section with a short introduction. In no way am I claiming to identify the most worthy college football team to be declared the National Championship. I am, however, attempting to identify the BEST team in college football, and in particular settle some of the age old debates of which team was better during split national championship years. Therefore, some of the results go against common thoughts. Anyone who has taken basic statistics knows that averages become more precise and representative with more data points. If Team A beats Team B head to head by 7 points, that does not necessarly mean that Team A is a better team. Team B may win the next 99 games. HOwever, 11 data points are better than 1, so even though LSU beat OU in the 2003 national championship game, the data over the full 13 game season (13 data points compared to 1) shows that OU was the better team over the course of the year. This takes nothing away from LSU or USC though, as they were the teams with the fewest losses, and in a world where so many 1-A teams play so very small schedules, they are most deserving of national championships, but you can't conclusively say they were the best teams in college football.
