The aptly named, Roaring Camp event has been called the American Civil War Association's homecoming event. The central location of the Santa Cruz mountains, at the site of an old logging railroad, makes it easily accessible to both reenactors and the public. Therefore, this is by far our most populated, single club, event. The event is also scheduled over Memorial Day weekend and is three days long. Because of the large number of reenactors, the encampments are large, and the small battlefield combined with large forces of troops, makes the fighting intense to watch and to participate in. On Memorial Day itself, the reenactors, blue and gray alike, form up and march in a touching parade to honor the thousands of Americans who died for what they believed in during what was the nation's worst crisis. Aside from those attractions, Roaring Camp has train tours open to the public, where the old narrow gauge locomotives pull trains up and down the hills and valleys under the shade of massive redwood trees. If there is only one event you can make, Roaring Camp is definitely the first pick. -2nd Lt. John Kalleen IV |
