Women in Islam and in the West

This article compares the treatment of women under Islam and the west.

Women's Liberation, International women's day and an assortment of many titles and slogans arriving from the western states, carrying an invitation for the Muslims to follow the Kuffar, and their views towards the woman, the family and the social system. So what is the view of the west, the carriers of this call towards the woman? What is the real picture of life painted by this view? What do they wish the Muslim's society to become? And what are the true aims of their call?

Before discussing the viewpoint of the west towards the woman, we will begin by showing the view-point of Islam first. It is not sufficient to say Islam is the Deen of Al-Fitra (human nature), which was sent down by Allah (swt), even though this should suffice for every Muslim such that they would reject all the ideas of the west. Rather it will be explained , in some details, the view of Islam towards the woman and how it is the correct viewpoint that will achieve positive results, pure from any negative effects.

Islam bases its view of the woman, firstly, on her being a mother, secondly, her being the keeper of the home, and thirdly an honour, which needs to be safeguarded. For the Messenger of Allah (saw) ordered us to respect the mother, thrice, and made her rights the uppermost of all rights, then ordered that she always be provided for as a wife, mother, daughter and a sister. He (saw) then made safeguarding her of the most honourable of duties, when he (saw) said “whoever died protecting his honour is a shaheed (martyr).” Islam limited the link between masculinity and femininity in the relationship between the man and woman to marriage alone, and forbade any other link between the two. Rather it forbade anything relating to this link between them, forbidding Khulwa (being alone with a woman), forbidding looking at other than one’s wife with desire, forbidding looking at the ‘Awrah (nakedness) of others, ordering the lowering of one’s gaze and covering one’s self, and made the basis in Muslim society the segregation of men from women.

So, what is the view of the West towards the woman? And do these wrong and disgraced people realise the aims of the West in this call they carry?

In the West, the woman is nothing more than entertainment. So the view is that she is entertainment firstly! And secondly! And thirdly! For this reason she reveals all of what she has to offer of entertainment, in her dress, her adorning of herself and perfume, at work and in the street, at the marketplace and places of leisure. Furthermore, this picture of the ‘woman” needs to be benefited from, not only to be enjoyed by whoever wishes to enjoy it, but also to market goods and services, to the extent that the dignity and honour of the woman enters into the price of most of their products and services.

If one were to scrutinise the desires of man, he will notice that there are some which can be satisfied and these are the organic needs, like the need to eat and drink, and there are some which have no limits, so man continues to ask for more - like a fire will continue to grow as long as you feed it and these are the instincts. So after one has eaten sufficiently and is full, he reaches a point where he cannot stand even the mention of food, but the situation is different regarding the instincts, for if one bought a vehicle, then saw another, he will wish to have it or something similar to it, and so on. So the procreation instinct, if the aspect of sexual desire in it is set free, will not stop at ones wife, if she existed, or one’s friend! Or one’s Mahram (those whom it is forbidden to marry, like family)! Or even the limit of the normal relations between man and woman! Not even at the normal relations between man and animals! This is exactly the reality of the West today, according to what is openly said, or what is kept secret and willingly committed. For this is the foundation and the majority and it is very widely spread!

Therefore, the view that conforms to the nature of man and his instincts is that of Islam, which brings about happiness and tranquility. Allah (swt) said “And among His Signs is this, that He created for you mates from among yourselves, that you may dwell in tranquility with them” [Ar-Rum: 211.]  Islam limited the relationship of masculinity and femininity strictly to marriage, then forbade all of which would lead to the agitation of this aspect of the instinct, for which it placed laws and directions and laid out limits and obligated punishments. All of this is to keep the society tranquil and free from any shortcomings.

This is the view of Islam towards the woman, and this is how she is in the Muslim societies today, despite the fact that they do not rule by what Allah (swt) has revealed and that the Muslims live in countries that do not implement the Shari’a. Despite all this, the situation is what it is, due to the remaining effects of the Islamic Aqeedah in the souls, and the deep-rooted Ahkam (rules) in the social systems of the societies. The woman there is like a queen, where she is crowned with a wedding feast and celebrations, witnessed by all the men and women in town, then her possessions begin to increase, and as she continues to grow older, she is taken better care of, all the while her possessions and wealth continue to multiply, similarly the number of her servants.

As for the viewpoint of the West, which it implements on itself and employs all possible means to innovate, from fashion models, to beauty pageants, to the arts in all its forms; what has this viewpoint produced!? It has produced every type of Munkar (evil deed) and shameful obscenities, diseases, crimes and so on and so forth. For the woman has lost all her grace. When she gets old she has been thrown into a distant corner, so that she does not annoy anyone, like an old piece of furniture, and is left with only a dog for company.

Those amongst the Muslims who carry this call should know that the viewpoint of the West may have a beginning, but it has no end, and it produces problems and crimes. Some of these imitators may think that the matter does not need to go any further than imitating their dress, their outward appearance and their actions, and the remaining characteristics would he left behind. These people are either deluded and ignorant, or corrupted liars.

This Western life does not suit anyone dignified, so how can it he suitable for the Ummah of Islam? And the aims of this call are a part of the constant work and continuous war declared by the Kuffar against Islam and its people.

So the West, after seeing that she was successful at removing Islam from the position of ruling by her destroying the Khilafah, began to work to make permanent this situation, so that the Muslims do not return once again to work for the resumption of the Islamic way of life. They have noticed the Muslims finding their way once again, so they began to target the social system to corrupt it and destroy it, since it is what is remaining to safeguard the Muslim societies' qualities and characteristics of honour, decency and family values… which makes it continuously responsive to restoration and to assume its responsibilities once again. So in "the slaughtered" Algeria, there is a conference for the woman, and in Jordan there are protests, led by the relatives of the king, to increase the punishment for those who commit crimes of honour, and in Egypt, there are reforms being made to the laws, which will weaken family values and weaken mans position as protectors of women

The call to these thoughts should be considered to be a way of life specific to the Kuffar. So the idea of raising the age of marriage and warning against early marriage is to promote fornication in its place. Therefore they will work to increase all the factors which cause agitation and desire between males and females, then prohibit the legal relationship of "marriage" using excuses like that the child in an early marriage will come out undernourished! What will happen then you may ask...? There will be fornication, and there will be rape, pregnancy and abortions and there will he young mothers ‘under the legal age’ giving birth, unmarried!

The Messenger of Allah (saw) had warned us against following the Kuffar, when he (saw) said "You will follow the ways of those who came before you, inch by inch and cubit by cubit, so that even if they crawled into a lizard hole, you would follow them. We said: Oh Messenger of Allah, the Jews and Christians? He said: "Who else?. So who else could they be?"

What is planned for the Muslims is dangerous, from spreading obscene, shameless actions to depravity. We can see these results with our own eyes everyday in the lives of the Kuffar, as we witness them discussing many cases, which are recorded as crimes according to them. We have been spared all this, by the grace of Allah (swt), with the favour of Islam and its Ahkam (rules). So the number of crimes in a single city, like Paris, London or New York, is greater than the crimes in the Muslim cities. Surely, this is enough to show the corruption of these calls and the danger they carry towards the Ummah.

“Verily, those who wish for acts of indecency  to be propagated among those who believe, they will have a painful torment in this world and in the Hereafter” [An-Nur: 19]
