The most popular Maccabi sport clubs in Tel Aviv are the soccer club and the basketball club. The Maccabi Tel-Aviv Sports Club was established in 1906, the soccer club was founded in 1910 and the basketball activity started in 1932.

The basketball club became the first Champion of Israel when the league started in 1954. Since then, it won the championship 38 times, including a streak of 23 consecutive titles. Counting up to the beginning of 1998/99, the team appeared in 980 league games, and had a balance of 901 wins and 79 losses. Since 1978, playoffs are being held. Maccabi participated in 125 playoff games, and balanced 110 wins against 15 losses.

The soccer club have won 18 championships and 20 cups.

Maccabi plays in "Ramat-Gan stadium" (45,000 seats), also the home of the Israeli national team. Maccabi Tel Aviv is known as the biggest and most successful club in Israel.

Maccabi Tel-Aviv has also been the first team to have won the State Cup in 1956. All in all it won the Cup 28 times. Maccabi made the "double" - championship and Cup in the same season - 24 times so far.

Maccabi Tel-Aviv was also the first Israeli team to have represented Israel in the European Champion's Cup. To date, Maccabi has taken part in 427 games in the various European Cups, and boasts 257 wins to 170 losses. Maccabi Tel-Aviv participated in eight European finals so far, and won the Champions' Cup twice.

On April 7th, 1977, Varese (Mobilgirgi-Italy) and Maccabi met for the second time in the European Champions' Cup final, at the Pioneer Stadium in Belgrade. Maccabi won 78-77. The 1980/81 season was the greatest Maccabi has known so far: It started the season by winning the Intercontinental Cup at Sarajevo, where it has beaten Bosna Sarajevo, Francana Sao-Paulo and Cansas State, and lost to Real Madrid. The team went on and won the Israeli double, and on March 26, at the Rennice stadium of Strasburg, it won its second European Cup, beating Sinudyne Bologna 80-79 this time.
