Centennial Convention 1998 Highlights
As you are all well aware, the International Convention for the centennial year was held in Richmond, VA to retrace the steps that our Founder's walked by visiting Longwood College in Farmville, VA. It all started October 15, 1898 when the little band of nine got together and wanted to establish roots for our beloved Zeta Tau Alpha.
The following pictures are just a few special memories from the tour of Longwood College, Zeta's presence is definitely felt there:
This Centennial clock was presented as a gift to Longwood College by Zeta Tau Alpha, Kappa Delta, Sigma Sigma Sigma, and Alpha Sigma Alpha; the Farmville Four that were founded at the college. Each face on the four-sided clock has the letters of each of the four sororities, the ZTA face of the clock (shown) will be dedicated on October 15, 1998.
This charter is the Alpha Chapter charter at Longwood College, although the picture is almost unreadable, the date is October 15, 1898. The charter is hanging on the wall of the Alpha Chapter Room in Stubbs Residence Hall.
This historical marker is located on the main street going past Longwood College. The marker is a gift from Zeta Tau Alpha to the College and the other Farmville Four to commemorate our 100th birthday. It will be dedicated on October 15, 1998. The marker states that Longwood College is the only US school where four national sororities were founded. It also states that ZTA is the only sorority in Virginia to be granted a charter by a special act of the General Assembly. The founding dates of the other sororities are also listed.
The plaque reads: "Zeta Tau Alpha in commemoration of its diamond anniversary presented the ceremonial mace to Longwood College home of its founding. Given October 15, 1973" The mace is displayed at all academic processions and traditionally carried by the senior faculty members. Located in the entrance to the library, this plaque is on the wall next to the mace. This October ZTA will officially dedicate the wooden case which houses the mace, to commemorate our 100th anniversary.
The Historical Display included the Purple of the Fraternity, which is worn by the National President. Other items in the picture include the list of National President's, the gavel, the oath of office book that is signed by all elected National Officers and the diamond badge and torch guard worn by National Council.
This building entrance is the famous rotunda, which is replicated at the entrance to the ZTA International Office in Indianapolis, IN. Inside the rotunda are bronze plaques with the names of the founding members of the Farmville Four sororities. There are also other plaques commemorating milestone celebrations including one honoring ZTA's 50th anniversary. This building also houses the famous bathroom that our Founders used to secretly meet in by candlelight.
