Here are some of the coasters, and what
we think of them, at Lake Compounce.
- Boulder Dash
-
This "mountain coaster" by CCI is built along the side of a mountain, following
the terrain so closely that, despite a first drop of over 100 feet and a total
drop of 140 feet, the track is never more than 20 feet off the ground. Boulder
Dash dodges through the woods and rocks, ducking and turning like a frightened
deer escaping from hunters, whizzing awfully close by trees, branches, and
leaves. The view is gorgeous, and the boulders are frighteningly close. We rode
this coaster late in the afternoon and on into the night. This was a new
experience for us: rocketing through the woods in near-total darkness, not
knowing which way the track was going next. Whee! This is a coaster experience
worth making a trip for. There are enough small turns in the primarily
out-and-back layout to add some exciting (and in the dark, unexpected) lateral
jolts. At night, the trains really fly. Is it just the perception caused by the
darkness, or do they really go faster? It doesn't matter, this coaster just
tears through the woods with incredible speed and power. It's a large, fast,
wild woodie with significant airtime, great pacing (all of it fast), a variety
of elements, and hardly any boring spots.

- Zoomerang
-
This is the standard Vekoma Boomerang. But
it is one of the most recent models (built in 1997) and they finally got it
right. This ride is smooth, with no headbanging. What a treat, especially
compared to older models of the same coaster. This ride becomes everything it
promises to be when you can enjoy all the flips and turns with no discomfort
whatsoever.

- Wildcat
-
Another classic coaster from the folks at Philadelphia Toboggan Company. Built
in 1927, this slightly twisted out and back wooden coaster is quite wild. It
really has a rough and tumble feel to it. In fact, it throws you around so much
that the ride is more fun if you hold on tight. It's not very big; the first
drop is about 80 feet and the ride lasts about a minute, and there's not much
air time.
