Airspeed Limitations

It is very important to be aware of the airspeed limitations of every aircraft.  Flying at too high of an airspeed can cause high load forces on the aircraft which can easily cause damage or even destroy the airplane.

Some specific airspeeds that a pilot should be aware of are:

Never Exceed Speed

The Never Exceed Speed is often abbreviated as "VNE".  This is the maximum speed that an aircraft can ever be operated at, and it should only be flown this fast in very smooth, calm air.

Normal Operating Speed

This is the cruising speed that the airplane was designed to fly.  Normal Operating Speed in often abbreviated as "VNO".

Manoeuvring Speed

The manoeuvring speed is the maximum speed that the aircraft controls can be fully deflected (used) without damaging the aircraft's structure.
