COCHISE STRONGHOLD
Cochise Stronghold, of course, is where the great Chiricahua Apache leader Cochise had his preferred camp location. It is located in the Dragoon Mountains, in Chiricahua Apache country about 100 miles south from Globe. The nearest town is Willcox -- another old famous Arizona town -- railroad terminal for Globe silver and iron ore. Cochise was buried somewhere near in these mountains by his people and the white man Thomas Jeffords. The site was never revealed to anyone. It was the Cochise-Jeffords relationship that the story of "Broken Arrow" was derived from. Frankly, the true story is not quite like the fictional one, but it is certainly dramatic and difficult to interpret even today.
