PIONEER PASS

Pioneer Pass is very ancient. Even the Salado Indians used it, as determined by archaeologists. It was over this pass also that Spanish and later Mexican troops from Tucson attempted occasionally to attack the Pinal Apaches--never successfully. This pass was also known to the mountain men Kit Carson, Antoine Leroux, Michel Robidoux and others. In the latter 1800s it saw the construction of an important stagecoach line to Florence. On that line the Apache Kid rode, as well as the last stagecoach robber, Pearl Hart.
