STONEMAN'S GRADE

This is a view of 'Stoneman's Grade," a cavalry trail built by General George Stoneman's troops in the fall of 1871, from old Camp Pinal (near what is now Superior) to the western end of the Pinal Mountains. (The trail can be seen near the center of the image.) Camp Pinal was moved from its original location near Superior to the western end of the Pinals, but the camp was abandoned a few months later when General George Crook assumed command. The trail was used for at least fifty years, before a modern road was built from Globe to Superior in the 1920s. It is interesting to know that the Yavapai boy Hoo-moo-thy-ah traveled over this trail many times, while he was a ward of the cavalry at Ft. McDowell.
