Lord,
It's that time of year again. We have butterflies in our stomachs, young and old alike, as we wonder what this new year will bring. It's exciting and dreadful, happy and sad, hopeful and fearful, all at the same time.
We pray for children and young people and all who return to classrooms this week as students. Open their minds to the wonder of learning. May they never grow tired of seeking knowledge and truth and may they continue to see the world through eyes unclouded by cynicism and despair. May they find friends who will help them make wise choices. For the little ones, those for whom these are the very first days, we ask a special blessing. May all of those in the elementary grades be surrounded by people of patience and understanding. Help those new to the rigors of junior high find their way as they change classes; help them, Lord, to be able to get their lockers open. For those in the highest grades, we ask your help in negotiating the rigors of math, science, English, and all the other foreign languages. May your love and presence enable all of them to meet the challenges of bus, class, lunchroom, hallway and playground. For those in higher institutions of learning, may they learn to balance critical thinking with the insights of faith. And Lord, may learning lead all who study to the Source of knowledge and understanding.
We pray for teachers, principals, counselors, and all of the others who help our children learn and who keep places of education functioning and safe. In the face of awesome responsibility, may they remember to laugh and to enjoy their charges and co-workers. May fatigue be held at bay by the wonder of faces lit by new insight. May they remember that often the unexpected display of kindness is the longest lasting lesson. And Lord, may they know your guidance and counsel as they help shape the lives entrusted to them.
We pray for parents, for those who tread the fine line of supporting new independence while providing the safe haven of love and encouragement. May they know your reassurance for their own fears as their children venture out of their protective arms. May they have the wisdom and courage to balance new learning with values of compassion, justice and acceptance. And Lord, may they feel the hug of your presence and leading as they seek fulfill the special calling of parenthood.
We pray for all who stand on the sidelines watching and cheering as this week's adventures unfold. May grandparents and aunts and uncles and friends listen with open ears to the dreams and fears that these days bring in their wake. And Lord, may they know your strength and never underestimate their value as agents of encouragement and purveyors of grace.
For us as your people, may we never forget that we are both teachers and learners as we continue our own faith journey. May we be sources of hope and reassurance as we seek to live the example you have given us.
Amen
