I'm not sure when this particular interest started, but
there's something about the 240D, with it's simple, utilitarian design
that I really dig. In Germany, it's often used as a taxicab, and perceived
less as a luxury sedan and more as utilitarian transportation. A friend
of mine from Germany calls it a "gypsy car", because it's so often used
by Turkish immigrants and modern day gypsies. Here in California, there
are more of them than in any other part of the world, and they're all in
better shape too, not just because of the weather. You never have to do
smog checks on diesels, so people really tend to take care of them. The
buyer's guide mentions them as probably "the most reliable car ever built." |
