The end of the old National Hall signified, to many, an end of the Czech life in St. Louis; others, however, were more optimistic. In the early 1960's committees were formed for the purpose of locating new property, raising funds, and planning a new building. Many sites were considered, but a decision was reached to purchase a two and one-half acre tract of land bounded by Kingshighway and Lansdowne. Later, the Kingshighway frontage of this lot was sold, and the money received from this transaction, combined with various contributions and the efforts of many fund-raising projects, was used to commence building the new Czech center.
Groundbreaking ceremonies were held on September 13, 1964. Shortly thereafter, architectural plans were transformed into three-dimensional forms by the Kalicek Construction Company, and the Center was partially opened for occupancy June 5, 1965.
The beauty of this building is easily seen. What remains unseen are the unaccountable hours members have spent in meetings and at hard work. Each brick represents, not only personal monetary contributions, which played a major part in making this Center possible, but also the noble spirit and untiring sacrifices so necessary to transform a dream into a true reality.
Now today, children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren of those early immigrants enjoy the benefits of those early toilers who made this building possible. It is up to all of us to be part of its preservation. There is no way to measure the value of the benefits this building has brought to us.
The CSA Fraternal Life lodges in times of sickness or loss of loved ones continue to be important components to our Center. The Sokol St. Louis gymnasium is keeping youngsters and people of all ages alert and fit. The pleasure of the various activities at the Center; as the music, language, and culture of our ancestors is remembered in a free land.
However, the most valued benefit is the friendships formed as a result of the activities in this building. May the American Czech Educational Center continue to serve us, our city of St. Louis and our country for many more years to come.
