 Day 1                Arrive Johannesburg International Airport. Tour of Johannesburg and Pretoria – including Union Buildings, Voortrekker Monument. Accommodation in the luxurious Marvol Manor guesthouse, Pretoria. Dinner at a city restaurant.

Day 2               To Pilgrim’s Rest, Mpumalanga – a restored 19th century gold-mining Village on the edge of the Drakensberg escarpment. En route see MacMac Falls, The Pinnacle, God’s Window etc. Accommodation in the delightfully restored Royal Hotel.

Day 3               To the Djuma Private Game Reserve on the edge of Kruger National Park. Open-vehicle game drives in quest of the “Big Five”. Accommodation in chalets at the luxury Bush Lodge. 

Day 4               Djuma. Bush Lodge. Game drives and game-walks.

Days 5 & 6            Kruger National Park. Accommodation in chalets at two of the park’s rest camps. Morning and afternoon / evening game drives.

Day 7               Across the border into the former Portuguese colony of Mozambique via the Komatipoort border post. To the Capital city, Maputo. Accommodation at the grandly colonial and fabulously decadent Polana Hotel.  Dinner at a Costa da Sol beachfront restaurant.

Day 8               Maputo. Tour of the colonial splendour and decay of this bustling city and surrounds. Polana Hotel.  

            Day 9               Travel north up the Indian Ocean coast to Inhambane Bay, and the idyllic Barra Lodge, nestling under coconut palms on the beach overlooking the warm Indian Ocean.

Days 10 & 11            Barra. Snorkelling, diving, sunbathing, slothing on the palm-fringed beach.

Day 12              Further north to the harbour and tropical resort of Vilankulos, on the mainland opposite the Bazaruto archipelago. Vilankulos Beach Lodge. Afternoon at leisure.

Day 13              Vilankulos. Day private boat trip out to Paradise (Santa Carolina) Island, the smallest and least developed of the Bazaruto group of islands.

            

             Snorkelling, wallowing in the warm waters, sunbathing – and a picnic on the beach.

Day 14              Travel northwest through baobab and palm tree-dotted savannah to the Chicamba Real Dam on the border with Zimbabwe. Accommodation at the Casa Msika resort on the banks of the dam.

Day 15              Into Zimbabwe at the Mutare border, and south to Masvingo, the country’s fourth largest town. Accommodation outside town at the Great Zimbabwe Hotel, situated next to the mysterious ruins of the ancient African city of Great Zimbabwe.  

Day 16              Great Zimbabwe. Morning visit to the ruins; afternoon game-viewing cruise on the nearby Lake Mutirikwe. Great Zimbabwe Hotel.

Day 17              To Bulawayo, and the Matobos National Park. Visit Rhodes’s Grave, World’s View and San rock art sites. Accommodation at the awesome Camp Amalinda Lodge.

Day 18              South to the South African border at Beit Bridge. To Messina, and the Aventura Tshipise Resort. Time to unwind in the warm waters of the mineral springs. Chalet accommodation.

Day 19              Down the “Great North Road” to Johannesburg. Wanderers Hotel. Farewell dinner at a city restaurant, and tour of “The Heartland”, the gay club centre of the city.

Day 20             Transfer to Johannesburg International Airport for return flights.
