SOUTH AFRICAN NATIONAL PARK SELECTION

DATES                 Sun. 01 to Sat. 14 April; Wed. 01 to Tues. 14 Aug.; Sat. 29 Sept. to Fri. 12 Oct.

Day 1                            Cape Town to Swellendam - the Bontebok National Park. Antelope - most notably the endangered Bontebok - and Zebras will be our major sightings.

Day 2                           Swellendam to the Wilderness, in the heart of the Garden Route - the Wilderness National Park. Lakes, rivers, beaches, forests, mountains and birds are the elements that make up this region.

Day 3                           Wilderness to the Tsitsikamma Coastal National Park. “Tsitsikamma” is a Khoi word meaning “the place of water” - and that is indeed what this park offers - rugged rocky shores, rivers and river mouths, and water birds in abundance.

Days 4, 5 and 6            Tsitsikamma to Port Elizabeth - the Addo Elephant National Park. As the name suggests, home to hundreds of these gentle giants, as well as Black Rhino, Buffalo and a variety of Antelope species.

Day 7                           Addo to Beaufort West, capital of the vast Great Karoo region. The word “Karoo” again comes from the Khoi language, and means dry, harsh landscape. The Karoo National Park is set in the towering Nuweveld Mountains overlooking the plains of the Karoo, and is home to Black Rhino, Zebra and Antelope species. Spectacular scenery!

Day 8                           North to the mighty Orange River, and the Augrabies Falls National Park. “The Place of the Great Noise” is how the Khoi described this awesome cascade of water through the abyss of the Orange River Gorge, the largest granite gorge in the world.

Days 9, 10 and 11            North to the red dunes and desert infinity of the Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park. Antelope, birds of prey - and, most importantly, the “big cats” : Lion, Leopard and Cheetah.

Day 12                          Augrabies National Park again - with a chance to river-raft or go on a camel-back game ride!

Day 13                          To the Atlantic coast and south towards Cape Town. Overnight on a guest farm en route outside the town of VanRhynsdorp.

Day 14                          West Coast National Park - a morning visit. On the Langebaan Lagoon, this park is a paradise of beaches, water birds and wild flowers. Early afternoon drive back to Cape Town.
