Jerry is a distant relative of Galia and Batya Bitzalel, who are decended from Jerry's ancestor's (Hal's) older sister (Gretchen). Unlike the Bitzalel line, Jerry's family line never went to Israel, staying in Cleveland for generations.
Though on the shortish side for a male, Jerry is an excellent doctor. He is also an accurate shot with a hand phaser and has been known to use a large stick as a self-defense weapon when there was no phaser available. He, of course, prefers not to harm others, but to heal them. He has an excellent bed-side manner and enjoys telling a good joke.
Though Jewish, he is only marginally attached to his culture and religion, a sharp contrast to his distant Bitzalel cousins. His hobbies include fishing, or the holodeck equivelant there of, swimming, and running.
Dr. Shapiro graduated in the to 10% of his class at Starfleet medical, and constantly reads all the medical journals so that he can keep up with the latest developements in the field of medicine. He is somewhat skilled in holoprogramming, and his ambition is to design a new kind of EMH [note: He will do so shortly before Galia Bitzalel graduated from the Academy in the future].
