The Welsh also once played a similar game, Bando and, aparently, Welsh colaminers would use pick or shovel handels as substitute if they run out of Bando sticks. The Welsh Bando withered away before the English Bandy formalised the rules, so it can be argued that Welsh bandy died before it was born and bandy is now unknown in Wales.
