The roots of Stuttgart date back to the 10th century. In those days Stuttgart was a stud farm for Herzog Luidolf to rare his horses, named Stutengarten. Indeed Stuttgart takes it's name and City's coat of arms, a black steed from this stud farm.
The Coat of Arms of the City of Stuttgart The earliest dated records of "Stuotgarten" are from the year 1229. In the 13th century Stuttgart obtained it's City status. The boost to the up until then unknown settlement came within the 14th century, when the Count of Würtemberg took up residency within The Old Palace Stuttgart. However, it wasn't until 1488 when Stuttgart became the official capital and residence of Count Eberhard. The next century, within which Stuttgart was for a short time in the hands of Austria, was characterised by political and scientific unrest. Throughout history the City of Stuttgart was often tested very hard, especially during the 30 years war. The yearly People's Fair was first celebrated in 1818 when King Wilhelma organised the fair for the citizens of Stuttgart. During the first halve of the 19th century the history of Stuttgart changed. Stuttgart became more an industrial region instead of the Regal region that it was. Men like Gottlieb Daimler and Robert Bosch started a new era in the history of technology and changed the history of Stuttgart. During the second world war the city was heavily damaged by several air raids. The building were quickly restored after the war, and Stuttgart became the Capital of Baden-Würtemberg in 1952.

ALTES SCHLOSS

Already within the 13th century a water moated palace existed here, which in the 14th century became the head seat of the Counts of Würtemberg. In the middle of the 16th century extensive renovations were undertaken by Christoph and Ludwig, the owners at the time. The result of the renovations was a Renissance style palace, with a new spectacular Inner Courtyard. In the 18th century the water filled moat surrounding the palace was finally removed, resulting in the structure that existed up until the second world war, within which the palace was damaged quite serverly. Thereafter the palace was reconstructed into the splendid spacious palace that stands there today.

GROSSE HAUS

The Great House was built in 1912 in place of the old Hof Theater, which was destroyed by fire. The Great House is one of the few buildings in Stuttgart that were not damaged during the air raids of the Second World War. Nowadays one will find the Stuttgart State Theatre located within it's spacious interior

FERNSEHTURM

The 216 m high Television Tower was built between 1954 and 1956 under the guidance of the Engineer Fritz Leonhardt and Erwin Heinle. The view from the visitors platform at the top of the tower, some 152,40 m high, is a breath-taking view of Stuttgart, the Schwäbish Alps, Black Forest, and on a clear day even the Alps can be seen.

SCHELLEN TURM

The 1564 constructed Schellen Tower ist one of the few remaining intact parts of the old City Walls. The tower is famous for the convicts who were imprisoned whithin it's walls. Today one will find a wine shop here in Weberstr. 72.
