For
three years now work has been in progress to improve the access to the
Pic du Midi .The project is nearly finished . As of Spring 2000 The cable
car from La Mongie is up and running .Many man hours and machinery has
been used to strengthen the road access .and during the summer of 2000
the work will be completed and it shall be surfaced and thus rid able for
a further 7km from the col de Tourmalet with standard tyres .I visited
the site on the 9th June. The road was rubble as you would expect ,possible
for mountain bikers and road bikes with suitable tyres. The final tarmac
should be going on in late summer .
Then we have to wait to see if it will
become a stage finish in the tour .At 2872m it will be a spectacularly
high finish .
On June the 11th the Pyrenees experienced
a freak rain storm which put a layer of wet snow on passes over 1500m.
Over 30cm fell in 36 hours .
The telephone number of the man responsible
for the access to the Pic de Midi
( in French please ) 05 62 91 97 85 ,
according to him there are no restrictions
to the access you can climb to the summit if you are fit enough and if
the snow is no longer there .
