'97: The Pyrénées and Dordogne by Norman D. Ford
During
September and October 1997, I spent 36 days cycling alone through Southwest
France. For 18 days I rode along the crest of the Pyrénées,
following part of the Tour de France route.
A
TOUR THROUGH THE PYRENEES
In
1992 I have done a two weeks tour through the Pyrenees from the Atlantic
(Hendaye) to the Mediterranean (Narbonne). Every town on my tour has a
camping. The weather in July was good,

An
Email about cycling in the Spanish Pyrenees
After
a 7 week cycling trip around the Alps in 1998, climbing the highest passes
in France, Switzerland, Austria and Italy, I decided to try my hand at
cycling over the Pyrénées. I was fortunate to have three
weeks leave during August 1999 and so I set about planning a new adventure.
It was to cover 1000 miles but, ideally, have more of an objective to it
than my Alps trip where I'd wondered across countries purely in search
of high mountains and rapid descents. On this occasion I wanted to actually
cycle somewhere, after studying maps it became apparent that the Atlantic
Ocean was a suitable starting place and the Mediterranean Sea was an equally
suitable finishing place.

The
challenge was to ride from one side of the Pyrennees to the other, crossing
most of the important passes on the way, in less than 100 hours. The organisers
are the Cyclo-Club Bearnais.
