Potential electrolysis side effects
These temporary side effects usually clear up soon after treatment:
- Redness which can last anywhere from less than half
an hour to more than a day.
- Swelling or welts which can last anywhere from less than half an
hour to more than several days.
- Tiny blisters (scabs, crusts, or eschars) which
usually appear the day after treatment and may last several days.
- Bruising which can sometimes occur when a capillary is accidentally
damaged and last a few days or more
These side effects tend to be more chronic on those who get them:
- Dryness/flaking/itching which is especially common in thermolysis
clients.
- Breakouts of acne due to inadequate skin care.
- Folliculitis (inflammation of follicles) caused by
sensitive skin, sometimes treatable by switching treatment methods.
- Ingrown hairs are more common as treatment progresses and hairs
become too weak to push through skin. Sometimes they may not come out for
weeks.
- "Tombstones" are dark bits of debris temporarily trapped
in the follicle, which look like blackheads. Sometimes they may not come out
for weeks.
The worst potential side effect, and the only irreversible one:
- Permanent scarring and pitting caused by poor electrologist
technique or inadequate client skin care.
Check with a doctor before starting if you:
- have a blood disorder like diabetes, hepatitis, etc.
- have a skin condition like lupus, scleroderma, impetigo, bad acne, or any
skin infection.
- have hyperpigmentation or scar easily.
- have a pacemaker (shielded ones may be OK, but you ought to check).
- are taking medications that make skin more sensitive such as steroids.
- want to treat an area with moles, warts, beauty spots, tattoos, or
sunburn.
Always use proper
skin care after treatments
