BSFL Toilet Paper Report 1997 Keepers and Projected Needs for each BSFL Team The information below is the Editor’s best guess at who each team will keep for the 1997, what their contract situation will be, and what their primary needs are for the upcoming season. Please remember that this information is simply a guess and should not be utilized for anything official. Players for 1997 & Contract Situation: The Boozers: Keepers: Emmitt Smith, Curtis Martin, Jerome Bettis Other potential keepers: Mark Brunnell Contracts Situation: No extra players to be paid. Emmitt needs to be signed this year. The Boozers will keep the 3 RB’s and start one of them at UG. Brunnell is the best up can coming player, but his fantasy points can’t crack this tough lineup. The X-Men: Keepers: Jerry Rice, Tim Brown, Ricky Watters Other potential keepers: Vinnie Testeverde Contracts Situation: Rice and Brown need to be signed. The X-Men traded for Tim Brown and Rice has no equal. This group of three are quality and there should be no chance for Testeverde to be kept. MADDogs: Keepers: Barry Sanders, Terrell Davis Other potential keepers: Eddie George, Curtis Conway Contracts Situation: Anyone he keeps, he needs to sign. Question is: how long? Our guess is that MADDogs will make Eddie George their 3rd keeper. The owner doesn’t want to lose another young RB. The Brown Marlins: Keepers: Drew Bledsoe, Herman Moore Other potential keepers: Cris Carter, Michael Jackson Contracts Situation: Bledsoe needs to be signed. The Brown Marlins may look to make a couple moves prior to the draft. They could get rid of a protection spot. The Fighting Wedge: Keepers: Brett Favre, Marshall Faulk, Other potential keepers: Tony Martin, Karim Abdul-Jabbar, Lawrence Phillips Contracts Situation: Favre and Faulk are signed The Wedge will definitely keep Favre and 90% sure on Faulk. Look for Tony Martin to be the third - 90% sure. Look out if Phillips or Jabbar have a great camp. The Mares: Keepers: Carl Pickens, Jeff Blake, Isaac Bruce Other potential keepers: Steve Young, Rashaan Salaam Contracts Situation: Bruce and Pickens signed. Has to pay Natrone Means for 1 year. The Mares have some players that they may be able to move. Though usually hesitant to grab a nut and make a deal, I think he will go with the three above, drop Young, and see if he can move Salaam. The Chicken Hawks: Keepers: Chris Warren, Terry Allen Other potential keepers: John Elway, Rodney Hampton Contracts Situation: Anyone kept, he needs to sign. Question: How long for Warren? The Hawks will take a chance on Warren. They have to keep Elway since they traded Tim Brown for him. Hampton won’t be kept. The Flying Circus: Keepers: Robert Brooks, Scott Mitchell Other potential keepers: KiJana Carter, Joey Galloway Contracts Situation: Anyone kept, he needs to sign. The Circus acquired Brooks for a 3rd rounder so they will keep him. Look for KiJana to be the 3rd player since he scored 9 TD’s and Garrison Hearst is gone. Assessment of each team’s needs for 1997: The Boozers: Obviously need WR’s and to a lesser extent a QB since they are going to keep 3 RB’s. Look for them to take the best player available at most times during the draft and then make trades early in the year to offset some of their weaknesses. Probably take the best WR available early. The X-Men: Have two quality WR’s and will need to fill in the second RB and starting QB positions quickly. Don’t be surprised by an early stretch for a TE or a PK. MADDogs: If he keeps the 3 RB’s then he is in the same boat as The Boozers: needs WR’s. If he goes with Conway at WR, look for him to shore up WR and QB quickly. The Brown Marlins: He needs quality players and could acquire another #1 pick by trading a protection spot. He has the first overall pick and should trade down to pick up an extra pick, but will probably sit tight unless someone goes to him with a deal. His main need is depth, depth, and more depth. Needs to take a RB, so #1 overall will most likely be a RB. The Fighting Wedge: Look for Matt to piece together his team again this year through the free agent wire after the draft. He doesn’t have a first rounder, but is in decent shape since he has #10 overall. He may want to package #10 and maybe a 5th rounder to move up into the mid-first round. Farve is the best and makes up for lacking a first rounder. He better hope he doesn’t get hurt. Look for a concentration on WR since most of the quality RB will be taken by #10. The Mares: This team needs to get some top quality player. He has many very good players, but he needs to make a blockbuster trade to acquire one of the best players in the league. He may not get what he thinks is fair value, but sometimes you have to give up a little more to get a true superstar. Needs RB’s in a bad way. Not many available so look for him to take one early. The Chicken Hawks: Why trade Tim Brown for John Elway? Kevin could have a great year if Warren comes back to his usual performance, but he is on shaky ground. Having Terry Allen allows them to trade Warren and not take the risk of signing him to a long term deal. He can get some value and two quality starters out of him. Most likely will be looking for WR’s and will probably be one of the first to draft a second QB since relying on Elway may be a little too risky. If he keeps Warren, then look for a run on WR’s. The Flying Circus: One never knows with Brian. He gets Favre’s favorite receiver for a 3rd rounder and he still has Scott Mitchell. If KiJana Carter can even have a decent season, then Brian could be GM of the year. Look for Brian to sit tight with his middle of each round draft pick and select a quality team. He would have 1 QB, RB and WR so he needs depth at the starting positions. He will take the best player at WR and RB the first few rounds. |
