Some Upsets, but no Surprises in Week 14
Unlike past seasons, nothing jaw dropping in the week 14 results. 12th seeded
Barry did upset 5th seeded Gates, but Barry was expected to win. Defending
Champion Outlaw, seeded 7th, and 10th seeded Deitrich staged a shootout that
recalled their 95 seasons. Talbot delivered his usual knockout blow to Jones/
Klingman. Cz upended Stroupe and Best and Mosakowski easily advanced. Wallace
and Jackson, sitting out this round with byes, had to feel lucky watching the
week 14 winners average nearly 47 points.
Steady Production Helps Best Stop Peil
Best put together an nearly complete game in dispatching Peil 60-31. Every
starter scored except Antonio Freeman. Freeman, just back from injury, did get
two bonus points. The game was over early when five of Peil's players could
only muster 17 points on Thanksgiving. Meanwhile, Terrell Davis, Anthony
Johnson, Issac Bruce, Tony Martin and the Green Bay D all scored on Sunday
and Steve Young added three scores on Monday night. This was Best's 4th game
with better than 60 points this year.
Same as it Ever Was: Talbot Over JK
In week 14 of 1992, the last year of divisions, The winner of the Talbot/Jones
Klingman game advanced to the playoffs. Talbot won. Wk 14 1994 Jones/Klingman
put up an incredible 46 points during the Sunday afternoon games only to see
Talbot score 53 on the Sunday and Monday night games. In 1996, things remained
the same. Talbot got five scores from his Viking combo and held off Jeff Blake.
(No, not everything went right for ECU Alumni this weekend). Be sure that
Talbot thanked Jackson and Terry Allen for his win.
Dangerous Barry Blows Out Jinxed Gates
Whenever Gates has a good year, he flat out flops in week 14. A bad year, he
wins. Although Gates had a new opponent this year in Barry, the result was
the same as in the three previous years versus Wallace, the lower seeded team
won. However, Barry is not your typical low seed. 4th in the league in scoring,
despite finishing 12th, Barry is a very dangerous playoff opponent. However,
he is also very streaky reflecting the nature of his leaders: New England Qbs
and Ricky Watters. Bledsoe had another one of those 4TD games.
MOS Lifts "Curse of the 4th seed"
Mosakowski easily dispatched Ricker, but it could have been closer had Ricker
played Marcus Allen and Chris T Jones. Never the less, it is the first time
that a fourth seeded team has survived week 14. Ricker himself was once a
fourth seeded upset victim. Brett Favre had another productive day and looks
to be his usual self in the month of December.
CZ Dials Long Distance to whip Stroupe
Czupryna has advanced in the playoffs for the fifth time in 6 years with a
47-30 drubbing of Stroupe. CZ was sparked by the two longest TDS of the day:
a 95 yard pass to Quinn Early and a 83 yard pass to Chris Sanders. Both
contributed to 8 point days for each receiver and that was pretty much the
margin of victory. CZ also gained a measure of revenge on Stroupe who beat CZ
in week 14 of 1994 resulting in only time CZ was unable to advance in the
playoffs.
BUD Penns Slim Victory over Outlaw
Deitrichs 55-51 win over Outlaw seemed more characteristic of their 95 teams
than the 96 teams. In fact, BUD broke his own two game point record by scoring
86 and 55 points for a total of 141. He scored 86 and 53 in back to back games
last year. BUD had a big game from Carolina D (16 points) and his second
consecutive 3 TD game from Carl Pickens. Despite those numbers, the game probably
turned on a late acquistion of KC's Chris Penn. Outlaw broke the record for most
points in a playoff loss. Monster games by Emmitt Smith and Eddie George went
for naught. There will be not be a repeat champion in the BRFL this year, but
will the 10 year streak of new champions continue? There are 4 former champs
and 4 potential first time champions left.
