1,2,3,4 in Final Four
One criticism our league gets from other leagues operating in division format
is that we reward mediocrity. In the first three years in this format, you
could make a case, but not this year. Bob Wallace will write fewer checks,
the top for regular season teams are the final four teams. The same four teams
are in the money.
Hostetlers 3TDs Rescue Wallace 31-24
For a while, it looked like top seeded Wallace was going to make history.
Not good kind of history, bad kind. No top seeded team had ever failed to
make it to the final four. It was given in the divison years, but in the
current format, the top seed never lost its first playoff game. Wallace was
very lucky to be in a position to win. 12th seeded Barry could have really
poured it on Sunday, however Wallace was left with an opportunity. No doubt
Barry, if he saw it, will replay that highlight of a wide open Shawn
Jefferson dropping a bomb in the end zone. Wallace, who has had some bad
luck in week 15 in the past, can finally savor some good luck.
Mosakowski hangs on 42-35
Before his Oakland D gave him a little padding with a safety, there was a
moment of panic for Mosakowski Monday night. Napoleon Kauffman was weaving
his way through the Chief's secondary slipping tackles and heading for
the goal line.... whew, dragged down at the one. He was removed from the
game. Later Kauffman broke loose again, but also didn't score. It's a cruel
game sometime: Talbot, who made a dramatic comeback with 31 points Sunday
night, could get over the goal line on Monday. Talbot goes home with
empty pockets for the first time since 1991. Mosakowski shows how far a
great QB (4 more TDs from Favre) and a modest supporting cast will take you.
Freeman helps Best blow out Czupryna 57-23
He may have been the last pick in the BRFL draft, but he is certainly not
the least: Antonio Freeman scored 21 points for Best as he was easily able to
deny CZ a return trip to the final four. Steve Young, the first pick in the
draft, chipped in 19. Young and Freeman, plagued by injuries in midseason,
are hitting their strides in the BRFL playoffs as is Best, who has scored
117 points in the two games. CZ was effected by Denver's decision to rest
an ailing John Elway, and never was a threat. Best last appeared in the
final 4 in 1994. It is his sixth appearance.
Jackson Ends BUD's Season, 43-21
Deitrich was hoping late run in an otherwise lackluster 1996 season would
propel him the the title he was denied in 1995. However, after a record two
week run (142 points), the law of averages caught up to BUD. This game was
notable for some interesting pre-game moves. Despite, holding the hot Carolina
Defense (16 pts in wk 14), BUD benched them in favor of Chicago. Calvin,
not to be outshopped, picked up New England. Both Chicago and New England
scored. Jackson however, got his usual standing order from Vinny Testaverde,
and one of his stud WRs scored, this time Jerry Rice.
