Week 1: Outlaw Loses Rice for Season

RICE...Before the hurt
Bledsoe...week 1 stud
Phillips...week 1 surprise

Outlaw lost more than a game this weekend, he lost his top draft pick. Jerry Rice tore up his knee and will be lost for the remainder of the season. Rice is, without a doubt, the most consistent player in BRFL history. He has scored more TDs since the league began 1986 than any other player. He has also been drafted in the first round for 9 of the last 10 seasons.

24 JK GB Q 14, Del Greco 10
75 BST NE Q 25, MIrvin 14, CCarter 13, TBarber 7, RCunningham 14, SF D 2

Best has his choice of 4 TD Qbs in in week 1 as back-up Dallas also threw for 4. Old and new players scored for Best. Tiki Barber had his breakout game and new Dallas kicker Richie Cunningham had 14. Old Warhorses Michael Irvin and Cris Carter had double TD games. 75 points breaks the opening day record held by Outlaw in 1994. Jones / Klingman has discovered that Brett Favre cannot do it himself. His supporting cast of five players only touched the ball 4 times...

57 CJ JAX Q 19, TAllen 13, EGeorge 11, DLevens 8, SBlanton 6
30 STP WAS Q 6, TDavis 7 TGlenn 6, Husted 7, Den D 4

Jackson enjoyed his weekend, as his Redskins won their opener and his Terry Allen received the benefit and not Stroupe's WAS QBs. Eddie George ran wild, and both he and Dorsey Levens padded their numbers with two point conversions. Stroupe lost his third straight opener and 4th out of his last 5.

52 BUD BAL Q 19, LPhillips 19, Vinatieri 11 MIA D 3
13 GTS DET Q 12, NJohnson 1

Deitrich's Lawrence Phillips totals in week 1 almost matched his totals for his entire 1996 rookie season. Gates, his owner in '96, was the ironic victim. Phillips point total was equalled by BAL QBs, who slipped in the draft to BUD as other owners doubted Vinnie could do it again.

64 DP OAK Q 18, RBrooks 6, TBrown 21, JSmith 13, CBlanchard 4, CIN D 2
21 CZ AJohnson 1, BCoates 6, CBonial 5, NE D 9

Peil came close to equalling his franchise best point total (65 in 1996 wk 3). Jeff George threw for three scores in his Oakland debut and DP doubled it by also starting his target, Tim Brown. DP could have humiliated CZ even more in the "geritol bowl" had he started Raymont Harris, who scored 13. Czupryna retired and vacationing, found out his new team on Sunday morning and selected a lineup. He didn't choose his 14th round pick, the NYJ QBs, who threw 5 TDs, but not that it would have mattered.

30*BR JAnderson 6, J Elam 15, GB D 9
41*TAL MIN Q 12, HMoore 13, MFaulk 1, MAlstott 1, GAnderson 6, IND D 8

Talbot, the master of week 1, won his fifth straight opener. Herman Moore caught a pair and the Min QBs, a familiar Talbot QB, tossed a pair. Ricker's Jason Elam and Green Bay's D, the first kicker and defense selected in the draft justified their lofty status, but BR had little else. Ricker was the last team to defeat Talbot in week 1, way back in 1992.

25 MOS MJackson 8, AMurrell 1, KCarter 13,TPederson 3
36 WAL PIT Q 6, CPickens 6,N Means 6, RSmith 9, MHollis4, STL D 5

Wallace continued his mastery of former roommate Mosakowski. MOS watched his SF QBs get battered with 9 sacks and the loss of usually durable Jerry Rice, Although while not MOS' player, the injury will play a role in downgrading his QB's future effectiveness. "Durable" is not a word used to describe Robert Smith, so Wallace will have to get as much out of him as he can.

27 BAR CAR Q 6, RWatters 7, KAJ 6,TThomas 1,Reed 1, DPelphrey 6
21 OUT CIN Q 8, WWalls 6, Kasey 5, Oak D 2

Barry started a couple late picks, CAR QB and Andre Reed, and it made a difference in his win over Outlaw reeling from the loss of Jerry Rice.

Jackson: Thumbs Up on Upset Possibility

WEEK 2

  • Jones-Klingman vs Czupryna
  • Best vs Jackson
  • Stroupe vs Deitrich
  • Gates vs Ricker
  • Peil vs Outlaw
  • Talbot vs Mosakowski
  • Wallace vs Barry
Jackson...History on his side
Terry Allen: Broken Thumb
His top running back is doubtful, his QB is hobbled and he faces Best who scored 75 points in week 1 without anything from Emmitt Smith... Can Calvin Jackson pull off the upset? Possibly. Consider the history of this rivalry. Best has not beaten Jackson in the regular season since 1992. Coming off of big wins, Best is usually horrible the following week.

J/K were their usual grave robbing selves as the picked up "Alphabet Man", Iheanyi Uwaezuoke, the replacement for Jerry Rice. Whether he can jump start a player lineup that tallied 0 pts and only 28 yards in week 1 remains to be seen. CZ may start a 14th round pick, the surprising Jets QBS, who threw for 5 scores in week 1.

Week 2, a year ago, Hurricane Fran blew into town and cut off the BRFL from the web, the telephone, and the NFL. Stroupe had no idea who he was playing, but he managed to phone in his lineup after waiting at a pay phone. He lost to BUD. This year the forecast is for nice weather and Stroupe and BUD are playing again.

Something has got to give: 0-1 Gates vs 0-1 Ricker. Expect Ricker to win. His QB, is Denver, who plays at Seattle where the lowly Jets threw for 5. Gates will probably suffer bad karma for cutting the BRFL's all-time most productive QB, Dan Marino.

Peil may not want to win in week 2 that bad. His beloved Chiefs are standing in the way of his BRFL Raider combo. Outlaw faces life without Rice.

Mosakowski and Druckenmiller. The longest names in the BRFL and NFL are linked in week 2, as SF starter Steve Young rests his aching head. Talbot has a good chance for a 2-0 start.

Barry gets a chance for revenge on Wallace who ended his season in week 15 a year ago. Despite the fact that both teams won last week, the 4 QBs on the two rosters combined had only 3 TDs.

Rice, Marino among Week 2 Cuts

Two members of the All-Time BRFL team were released today due to roster moves for week 2.

Outlaw released the injured Jerry Rice. The 49'ers are holding out hope that Rice might return for the playoffs, but that is too late for Outlaw. Jeff Thomason, a back-up tight end on Green Bay, replaces the nine time first round choice.

In the early days of the BRFL, the consensus number one pick was Dan Marino. His TD totals were staggering, he was, year after year, the whole offense of entire BRFL teams. This year, he is in danger of being benched, and Gates, who drafted Miami as his back-up, has read the writing on the wall. He was replaced by Arizona R Rob Moore.
