Familiar Opponents Help Best to the Top

CZ was a couple Bonial boners away from nearly upsetting Best
Kauffman found the Georgia Dome air conditioning to his liking
Outlaw: Another one bites the dust

3-0 Best is now the lone undefeated team as Wallace, Peil and Dietrich suffered set backs. Best, in his tenth BRFL season, has defeated, in succession, the three other teams that remain from the year that he joined: JK, Jackson and CZ.

Week 3 Results

38*JK: GB Q 12, WDunn 7, JGraham 6, RLongwell 11, TB D 2
13*CJ: BUF Q 6, DLevens 1, SBlanton 7, CAR D 4

JK's rookie tandem of Dunn and Graham equaled the entire output of Jackson's "whirlpool gang". Throw in the Green Bay combo, and it was a surprisingly easy upset win for JK. Will Jackson have the patience to keep together his nicked up team or will there be a major trade or bloodletting? The league thinks the latter as it awaits more "Tuesday morning specials".

51 BST: NE Q 12, TBarber 8, CCarter 6, SF D 8, RCunningham 17
39 CZ: SEA Q 12, CMartin 9, BCoates 6, NE D 3, CBonial 9

CZ actually had his chances in this game, but fate was clearly on Best's side. A couple of turning points.

  • CZ's Ben Coates took himself out for an injury just before Best's QB threw a TD pass to his replacement.
  • CZ's Chris Bonial missed a four point field goal late in the half allowing Dallas to take over with good field position and allow Best's kicker a four pointer at the end of the first half of the Monday night game.

25 DP: Oak Q 6, CWarren 7, RHarris 6, CBlanchard 4, Det D 2
32 BAR: KC Q 6, RWatters 1, EMcCaffery 6 PHL D 8, Christie K 11

In football, a good defense can bail out an mistake prone offense. It is true in the BRFL as well. Barry had enough points on his bench to defeat Peil, but trailed going into the Monday night Philly Dallas game. Fortunately the Philly D came up with a big fumble return to spark the comeback win.

36 TAL: Min Q 9, MAlstott 6, HMoore 6, GAnderson 15
33 BUD: BAL Q 12, LPhillips 6, DAlexander 6, AVinatieri 9

Deitrich was also hoping for some defensive help on Monday night to avoid losing to Talbot. It was the third straight year that Talbot handed BUD his first loss of the season.

50 OUT: NYG QB 8, LSmith 6, WWalls 12, JKasey 14, OAK D 10
14 WAL: PStoyanovich 12, StL D 2

It was slim pickens for Wallace with the bye week, but he usually as the means to pull one of these out with help from his bench and special reserve. He used to have guys like Lamar Smith that would rise to the occasion, but Lamar toils for Outlaw. Man Standing". Rashaan Salaam has joined Jerry Rice in street clothes and crutches for the remainder of the season. Latest Rumor: Outlaws's injury plagued 1997 season has inspired Hollywood to make a movie: "Last Man Standing".

43 GTS: DET QB 12, BSanders 2, NKauffman 16, JMorton 6, GDavis 6
38 STP: WAS Q 12, T Davis 1, GHearst 6, KJohnson 6, MHusted 4, DEN D 9

Gates finally got a full game out of Napolean "Heat Stroke" Kauffman and the result was two long distance TD runs. Barry Sanders returned to form - lots of yards, no TDS. Stroupe might have pulled this out had he started Michael Westbrook rather than the injured Terry Glenn.

36 BR: DEN Q 24, AFreeman 6, JElam 5, GB D 1
41 MOS: SF Q 18, AMurrell 1, TWheatley 6, MJackson 6, TPederson 7, SEA D 3

The fantasy newsgroups scream "Cut Wheatley Now" Mosakowski doesn't read newsgroups. Wheatley scores, he wins, and his quarterback survives to play another week. Ricker falls into the cellar and with first pick of Calvin's weekly discard to replace Ike "no neck" Hilliard.
