In a college football poll, if the number 2 team knocks off the number 1 team,
they usually moves up to number 1, correct? In the BRFL, a number 2 team knocks
off a number one and moves to FOURTH? Such is the fate of Gates. With five
3-1 teams, the way that tiebreakers are determined is by total points. So when
Gates knocked off previously undefeated Best 50-45, he didn't knock him out of
first place. He just knocked him into a five way tie.
BRFL rules state that until head to head tie breakers can be applied to
all tied teams, total points is the tie breaker. Still number one
Best has the most points, followed by Talbot and Peil, who both outscored
Gates this week.

45 BST NE Q 18, WFloyd 1, CCarter 6, RSmith 12, JHanson 6, SF D 1
This week, Gates' lineup was primarily dependant on the fortunes or two
teams, Minnesota and Detroit. When both offenses looked sluggish in the first
half and fell behind big, Gates figured he had then just where he wanted them.
Never underestimate the power of then desparation comeback and the garbage time
TD. Best did have his chances. Gates was through at 4:00, but Best
had 4 players left. Only Rod Smith was making significant noise. Gates
didn't start any Atlanta players, but it was the Falcons garbage time
TD that took a six point shutout bonus away from the SF D and preserved
a five point win.

A couple of long runs in this game in what seemed to be a weekend
full of long TD runs. Ki-Jana Carter did the honors for MOSAKOWSKI with
a 79 yard run. In the same game, Stroupe's Terrell Davis reeled off a
50 yarder. However, Stroupe, 0-4, can't catch a break: a total of 26 teams
have scored less than he has this season, but Stroupe cannot seem to get
matched up against them. That's more than 50 percent of the games other
than his own featuring a team that scores less than Stroupe.

Never underestimate the power of a QB team that scores 5 touchdowns.
With an emerging supporting cast, including flashy rookie Warrick Dunn, JK
might be on their way to the upper division with two straight wins. BUD
stumbles again this week, but is still getting good play from his Vinnie
to Derreck Alexander combo.

Peil never got a lineup from Wallace this week, but save a total team
swap with CZ or Talbot, who knew he had to be in good shape. Oakland's
QBs and Cary Blanchard led the way with 19 and 18 respectively. DP, who
started two backs for the second week, might want to rethink that unusual
(for him) strategy as three receivers on his bench scored. Wallace made a
furious charge on Monday night. scoring 37 of his 51 points. However, Peil
got an early insurance TD from Jimmy Smith and probably turned in early.
It was the second
straight year that Peil went over 60 to beat Wallace and it might be "deja
-vu" all over again: after losing to Peil in week 4 1996, Wallace was also
also 2-2 and then reeled off 8 straight wins and 11 of 12 to take the
BRFL title.

Another rematch of week 4 1996 with the same result: Ricker over Outlaw.
Antonio Freeman finally showed flashes of his 96 for with a pair of TDs and
If Elway can continue this pace and Ricker's backs can get motivated,
Ricker's move from the cellar might be permanent.

About once a year Talbot has a monster game. Here is the progression
of his personal scoring record:
- 92 wk 8 Talbot 56 Best 22
- 94 wk 1 Talbot 61 Montgomery 40
- 95 wk 16 Talbot 69 Deitrich 48
- 96 wk 11 Talbot 70 Best 38

21 CJ BUF Q 12, Dlevens 1, CAR D 1, SChristie (SR) 7
Talbot's 74 was not the highest score this week. Talbot's 74 was
not even the highest score in his family this week. His father in law,
CZ reached 80! It was only the sixth time in league history the 80 point
barrier had been reached. You never know about draft night. On one hand
there was Jackson, who made trade after trade and built a seemingly
incredible team. And then there was CZ: absent and drafting from a script.
Eyebrows were raised on a couple choices... Rookie Antowain Smith was
taken in the third round. Mario Bates, who seemed to be a whisker away from
being cut by the Saints, was taken in the fifth... Smith and Bates EACH
scored 21 points this week. Jackson's entire team scored 21. Injuries
and have dogged Calvin all year, but also, the high powered offenses that
support his starters have not produced. One wonders if Jackson has something
up his sleeve?

StandingsA couple teams on the upswing meet in week 5, so someone's momentum has
to give. The starting QBS Green Bay and Detroit meet in a game, so that's
the game that will decide this game. There might be problem for JK if Green
Bay gets too far ahead at the half, but this probably won't happen two
weeks in a row. JK to win easily.
Oh lucky BUD: Bledsoe has a bye! Best will go with Dallas,
Dallas, Dallas and Dallas figuring that the point starved Cowboys will light
it up against the Bears at home. Bud has his Raven combo in Sunny San Diego.
Expect Dallas to be tight again, and BUD should win a nail biter.
