Week 7: Now Playing... James Stewart in "The Philadelphia Story"

It was a Wonderful Week as JK's James Stewart scored 5 TDs against the Philadelphia Eagles equalling the BRFL record for a single player leaving Outlaw with a case of Vertigo. Photo Link to ESPNET

Wacky week 7. With six teams on byes, BRFL owners were forced to reach deep into their rosters to fill out a lineup. Had Bam Morris not been spending his weekend making up for lost time with his parole officer, JK might have left James Stewart in Bedford Falls. Deitrich and Peil got extraordinary games from the backup QBs, Moskowski and Gates discovered a waiver wire wonders to pull their games out and in the always controversial Wallace/Talbot game, there was a TD that had us reaching for the rule book...

Week 7 Results

82 JK: GB QB 18, JStewart 31, WDunn 7, MChmura 12, RLongwell 6, Pit D 8
24 OUT: OMcDuffie, 6 WWalls 6, BEmmanuel 6, JKasey 2 ATL D (SR) 4

Same old JK? Five straight wins...the fourth highest score in BRFL history.. This game breaks the duo's previous high game: 93 wk 14 JONES/KLINGMAN 56 MONTGOMERY 22 . In that game, the Cardinals Ron Moore came out of nowhere to score 4 TDS, much like James Stewart did this week. However, take away Stewart and JK still whips Outlaw. Overlooked was Favre's 3 TDs, two to Chmura. Outlaw was not impressed, he's seen worse. He remembers this game: 96 wk 6 Barry 90 Outlaw 28.

That record could have been matched had JK used Al Del Greco instead of Longwell. Same old JK...

38 MOS: SF Q 18, TWheatley 7, MAndersen 12 (SR), Mia D 1 (SR)
27 BAR: CAR Q 12, RCarruth 6, KAJ 6, RWatters 1, DPhelphrey 1, PL D 1

Mosakowski holds on to first over Barry, but with some outside help: Special Reserve pickups Morten Andersen and the Miami D supplemented his regulars which only scored 25. They are not spectacular, but they are wins. Six of them, in a row, to be exact.

47 DP: Ten QB 18, RHarris 7, FWycheck 6, MHarrison 6, CBlanchard 10
16 BR: JAnderson 6, GB D 2, New Orleans QB (Sr) 6, KButler 1 (SR)

The bye week forced Peil to clear his bench and what a bench it was: Tennessee QBs had their high game of the year, throwing one to Frank Wycheck. Struggling Ricker had little to offer with his SRs of New Orleans and Kevin Butler. Butler at least did one better than Ricker's kicker of week 6: none.

42 STP: WAS QB 6, GHearst 1, IFryar 19, AHastings 6, KJohnson 6, MHusted 3, TEN D 1 (Sr)
34 BST: NE Q 12, CCarter 6, MIrvin 6, RCunningham 4, SF D 6

This game featured 8 starting wide receivers and Stroupe made the most of his group thanks to Irving Fryar's annual big game. Fryar is the classic guy that goes weeks without scoring and then rips off a monster game. Best was counting on his Cowboys to bring him back Monday night, but they disappointed again and Best suffered his fourth straight loss.

46 GTS: DET QB 6, BSanders 23, EMurray 3, Min D 2, WDavis 12 (SR)
38 CZ: NYJ QB 13, CMartin 7, MBates 6, BCoates 6, JHall 2, NE D 4

Gates, between Napoleon Kauffman and Barry Sanders, is into dialing long distance this year. However, this is not a distance scoring league and we celebrate James Stewart 5 TDs this week as opposed to Barry's 3. CZ put up a good fight and Gates had to get some extra help from his old pal Willie Davis and his 12 special reserve points. Davis might probably find more permanent BRFL employment this week.

49 BUD: PHL 19, JBettis 7, Vinatieri 16, Dallas D 7
10 CJ: DLevens 6, EGeorge 1, SBlanton 1

Jackson has averaged 49 points vs Deitrich in their four games, including 49 the last two times out, so it is fitting that BUD got 49 this week. Jackson's 10, matched his week 5 total and his four season low. The JAX/PHL game loomed large here: Jackson asking himself if a completely healthy Brunell could have scored some of those James Stewart TDs. BUD's Philly QBS, in for the Ravens, made the most of their bye week start with three garbage time TDs. Jerome Bettis finally scored after a four week drought.

50 TAL: Min Q 18, TOwens 12, HMoore 1, GAnderson 13, IND D 6
29 WAL: PIT Q 6, MHollis 8, RSmith 7, STL D (SR) 8

Talbot continues to pound his opponents, waiting for Mosakowski to get knocked off so he can take his rightful place at the top. This week, he took pleasure in whipping old nemesis Wallace, who had dreams of moving into second. Wallace had to be looking at the James Stewart's 31 and wondering how much would have been his had injured Natrone Means been in there. Last week, Wallace had a Stewart scoring 31 points, but this week Kordell was banged up. However, not even the great "Slash" has ever accomplished what Talbot's Brad Johnson did this week: Thrown a TD pass to HIMSELF. This highlight had us looking up in the rule books how this might be scored. The rule is quite clear that a QB can catch a TD pass. There is no restriction on who throws it, therefore Talbot gets a rare double.

Week 8 Preview

A few, but not many of us, will be peeking at the Thursday night game during commercials of "must see TV". For some reason, this annual Thursday night pre-World Series game is always a snoozer, and since nobody has these kickers, expect little get excited about.

Jones-Klingman vs Barry

It will be interesting to see who JK will use as a QB this week with Favre on a bye. Go figure, a team that keeps two kickers doesn't keep two QBs around for the bye week. Most of the teams that are available are starting backups: Stoney Case, Danny Kanell, Danny Wuerful. Ugh!

Warrick Dunn is also sitting, so there IS room in the line-up for James Stewart, but he faces Dallas. Jailbird Bam Morris goes against the Dolphins in Miami. So if he even MAKES it to the game, it will be tough. The forum will be quiet this week as JK gets upset.

Best vs Wallace

A rematch of last year's Super Bowl, and a chance for Best to pull out of a serious slide. A couple favorable QB matchups - road games vs division foes. Look for Best to reassert himself over longtime foe.

Jackson vs Mosakowski

Mosakowski has been winning, but he stoops to the level of his opponent. In this case he wins 11-10...

Stroupe vs Talbot

Talbot has to sit his Johnson to Johnson "combo" this week, but he counters with Marino. Talbot is always known for having a big game when he starts a backup. Stroupe will counter with Terrell Davis, but Marino will have a huge game.

Deitrich vs Outlaw

When he has been brutalized in the past, it has taken several weeks for Outlaw to bounce back. Expect a lot of wound-licking here, and perhaps another stomping. Bud could get some garbage time scores with Baltimore and expect the BUS to rumble, as Kordell keeps it in the pocket after being knocked woozy last week.

Gates vs Peil

This one will be a fairly low scoring affair, I expect Gates to steal it with a late Kauffman TD.

Czupryna vs Ricker

Once upon a time, this was a Super Bowl. This week, a couple 2-5 teams slug it out. CZ looks a little hardier with his big backfield, and Antowain Smith gets the Colts, a team he blitzed for 21 points a couple weeks ago. However, like most of America, CZ won't be watching that Bills/Colts Monday Night game. He won't have to.
