And now a collective sigh from those at the top... Good thing this was week 8 and not week 14. All 7 higher ranked teams lost this weekend. Compounding that was that only two of those games involved teams with the same record. Most were huge upsets. Like (12)Jackson over (1)Mosakowski, (11)Stroupe over (2)Talbot and (14)Outlaw over (3)Deitrich. Those games weren't really that close. All games were decided well before Monday's 9-6 snoozer. (Isn't there always an AFC East team vs the Colts in 9-6 game in the "snoozer dome"?)

Week 8 Results

43 BAR: CAR QB 6, KAJ 19, RWatters 7, EMcCaffery 6, DPelphrey 4 PHL D 1
12 JK: MAllen 6, ADelGreco 4, PIT D 2

Hello, Mr Jones? Paging Mr Jones? We are anxious to hear what you have to say about this debacle. For openers, there's that 70 point drop. A league record by the way. Previous was Talbot going from 69 to 14 from week 16 to week 17 in 1995. Granted, Favre was off, but you replace him with New Orleans? As in NO QB or "no QB".

Karim Abdul Jabbar outscored JK with 19 points by himself. KAJ got a little help from JK's Bam Morris who must have still had his handcuffs on when he fumbled to set up a short KAJ TD run. Barry took it easy and left 16 extra points on the pine based on QB and D/st choice.

26 BST: NE QB 12, ESmith 6, RCunningham 8
15 WAL: PIT QB 12, Mhollis 2, DET D 1

Best stopped a record in-season losing streak with this victory over long time foe Wallace. Best is a perfect 4-0 versus teams that joined in the 1980s and 0-4 versus the teams from the 1990s. Wallace nearly stole this one: Twice during the PIT/CIN game, Wallace was denied what looked like sure TDs. Kordell Stewart was crunched at the goalline on a short run where it looked like he would easily score. On another play, Carl Pickens lost the handle on the ball inside the 10 after a long catch and run.

50 CJ JAX QB 20, EGeorge 13, CCalloway 8, JHanson 8, NYJ D 1
35 MOS SF QB 12, AMurrell 6, RDudley 6, MStover 7, SEA D 4

Looks like there is a glitch in Mosakowski's schedule. He usually gets teams on their down week. In other words, he should have had Jackson in week 7 when he scored 10 points.

Hi-dee-hi-dee-hi-dee-ho! Looks like Jackson has found a starting WR in Chris "Cab" Calloway who had a big game. Calloway would make a nice replacement for disappointing Eddie Kennison, who's lack of production is so puzzling that doctors might consider naming a disease after it. For Example: MOS' Michael Jackson has "Kennison's Syndrome".

38*STP: WAS Q 12, TDavis 16, GHearst 1, HWalker 7, DEN D 2
21*TAL: MFaulk 1, HMoore 1, TOwens 12, GAnderson 4, IND D 3

So much for trends in trying to predict Talbot. He was formerly the master of the QB bye week, but Miami ran all three of their scores in. Credit Stroupe with the pick up of the week as Hershel Walker scored on a long TD catch. Walker, who has been kicking around the BRFL since its inception, had yet to find a spot on a roster this season until this week.

43 OUT: TKirby 15, KMcCardell 7, BEmmanuel 6, JKasay 7, Oak D 8
26 BUD: BAL QB 7, JBettis 7, DAlexander 6, AVinatieri 5, DAL D 1

Outlaw may have not got any production out of his QB this week, but he had the only defense that scored a TD. The assorted odds and ends that make up his team finally came together for the second time this year and shot down a big time opponent. BUD has to be wondering what's up with Lawrence Phillips who has been on alternate weeks been sidelined with Turf Toe and Kennison's Syndrome.

51 GTS: DET QB 6, BSanders 7, NKauffman 10, JMorton 6, JLewis 1, ARison 12, PStoyo (SR) 8, BAL D 1
38 DP: OAK QB 12, CWarren 6, JSmith 6, JJett 6, CBlanchard 6, CIN D 2

Napolean Kauffman continued Gates' tradition of long runs with an 83 yard burst. Barry Sanders, who had TD runs of 80 and 82 yards last week, chipped in a run of a mere 8 yards. Kauffman has more that justified his early selection in the 1997 draft. Former bad boy Andre Rison was a late round steal. If the Detroit QBs develop any consistency, Gates may discover that the BRFL season can extend beyond Thanksgiving.

For Peil the surprising success of James Jett has come at a price - severe dip in the production of Tim Brown. That is what is USED to be known as "Kennison's Syndrome". The secondary receiver stealing the TDs from a superstar primary receiver.

30 BR: DEN Q 6, JAnderson 6, YThigpen 6, TMathis 6, JElam 5, NO D(SR) 1
15*CZ: CMartin 1, BCoates 6, JHall 6, NE D 2

In the battle of absentee drafters, Ricker comes out on top. Jason Elam "returned" to Ricker's lineup and contributed 5. CZ's John Hall came close to making NFL history with a 68 yard field goal that just missed. The BRFL does not have a graduated bonus point scale for kickers, but might want to consider one.

Week 9 Preview

The two teams Best and Mosakowski that have occupied first thie year play each other and there is an the annual "Family Feud" are the feature games.

Jones-Klingman vs Wallace

You would think that over the years, one of the leagues most consistent teams, Wallace would own JK, one of the leagues most inconsistent. Think again. JK has won three of the last four and save for a one point loss last year (Darn that wrong kicker!) would have won four straight This year, more of the same. JK gets Wallace in an unbelievably bad spot. To put Wallace's woes in perspective: His healthest player is Robert Smith... JK has some fantastic matchups including Green Bay against the Pats without a running game. JK sinks Wallace below .500.

Best vs Mosakowski

Now that the schedule has flipped, MOS is playing the low numbered teams, which have shown to be tougher. The weakest of the bunch, Jackson, whipped MOS last week. San Francisco QBs also has a tough second half, but this week, they are still are feasting on weak division fodder with a second helping of the Saints. Best, after seeing Emmitt score last weekend, continues to get good news about his backfield, as Tshimanga Biakabutuka, Steve Broussard, and Tiki Barber will see increased playing time. The Qbs should cancel each other out, but Best will win with player scores.

Jackson vs Ricker

Jackson's "Whirlpool Gang" is missing three starters due to injuries. He's playing Ricker, so it is a fair fight. I expect Antonio Freeman to pull this out on Monday night.

Stroupe vs Barry

After an 0-4 start, Stroupe has won three of four and should continue to climb in the standings. Somehow, very quietly, he had gotten good. Barry will see a let down after whipping JK.

Deitrich vs Peil

The Beer Bowl. Bud vs Peil (trust me, there is/was a beer called Peil's ) The one that will be crying in their beer will be Peil. I suspect Vinny will rack up in a shootout and Jeff George experience a letdown.

Gates vs Outlaw

Frankly, I have no idea who Gates will start this weekend. The Lions are on a bye. However, he is playing Outlaw, which most weeks has been the BRFL equivalent of getting a bye. This game might be like their first ever meeting: 93 wk 6 Gates 12 Outlaw 9 only lower scoring.

Czupryna vs Talbot

I was reminded of this game a couple weeks ago during my visit to Southern Pennsylvania. How would the Amish follow fantasy football? Just kidding. However, If you don't have a connection to the Internet, it would seem quite primitive by todays standards: Buy a USA today on Friday to get the injury report and watch Chris Berman to see who scored and then wait until Monday morning paper to get all the bonus point totals. I can remember lying in bed on a Monday about 5 AM waiting for the "thump" of the paper on the driveway, so see if I had enough bonus points to beat long forgotten teams like Bratcher and Montgomery. Remember the Cleveland Browns? How about the LOS ANGELES Raiders and Rams? Greg Bell? John L Williams? Tim Worley? Those were the days... Oh, this game. Talbot should win, and with a loss by Mosakowski, claim the top spot this late in the season for the first time since week 11, 1993.
