Week 10: Parity Rears Its Ugly Heads

Jones Klingman

There is nothing real in the world anymore... Oakland Raiders' radio announcer Bill King
Perhaps you remember that quote. It is from with NFL films' depiction of the "holy roller" play that Oakland used to beat San Diego in 1978. It kind fits the shock of the BRFL when they discover that JONES - KLINGMAN is ranked number one. That's right JK... long the league's dormat. Eleven seasons of rumbling bumbling stumbling, and only one money appearance (1988). Never a contender, always a pretender. If NFL Films ever did a video of their history , it would be called Fantasy Football Follies....

Klingman, better check your fingers, you are actually number 1. As for JK, the rest of the league has a finger for you.

How did this happen? Parity? Is the playing field finally level? Three games separate top to bottom. Are we heading for a week 14 with all teams are 7-6? I don't know if that is possible, but it is likely that the tiebreakers will be a nightmare. Look back two years ago. In 1995, Deitrich was plugged into a net and was a perfect 10-0. Adam Barry was drafting out of an old magazine and was 0-10. Now just about everyone is plugged in and things have evened out considerably.

Is the league too smart? Is that why we have such little player movement? In the commercial ESPN league, the week James Stewart scored five TDs, he was only in a third of the leagues and started in 10 percent of those leagues. JK started him in the BRFL. Fred Lane is probably the hottest pick-up property this week in fantasy leagues, but he has been on BRFL roster every week but one.

Four semi-dynastic teams like Wallace, Best, CZ and Jackson mope along at 4-6. JK, who was predicted at week 2 to be 0-10 at this point, rules the league. There's nothing real in the world anymore...

Week 10 Results

40 JK: GB Q 6, IBruce 15, BMorris 1, MAllen 6, JStewart 1, Rlongwell 8 TB D 3
30 TAL: MIN Q 6, Alstott 6, MFaulk 6, GAnderson 5, Indy D 7

Reverend Ike, a forgotten man in the first half, has made a comeback with a torrid game. Bruce's 15 points helped make up what was a lackluster game from Favre who only had 6.

Talbot got his backfield moving with scores from Alstott and Faulk, but his receivers got real quiet. It was his third straight loss.

50 BR: DEN Q 12, JAnderson 8, GBrown 6, J Elam 13, GB d 11
40 BST: NE Q 13, Carter 7, RSmith 8, MIrvin 6, RCunningham 4, SF D 2

Deja Vu for Best vs Ricker: In 1995, Best lost starting back Natrone Means to an injury vs Ricker. In 1996, it was Tim Biakabutuka. This year, it was Biakabutuka and Emmitt Smith. To add insult to injury, Fred Lane stepped in for Biakabutuka and scored 20 points. At least Best won both those games, but this year more deja-vu: In 1994, Best lost to Ricker on a defensive score in a night game. Same deal this year when Green Bay's D took one back against Detroit and erased Best's slim lead.

48 STP: WAS Q 18, TDavis 1, GHearst 7, TGlenn 6, GDavis 8, DEN D 8
45 DP: Oak Q 13, RBrooks 6, TBrown 2, JJett 6, CBlanchard 9, Cin D 9

Stroupe, the only thing that passes for hot in this Lukewarm at best league, is 5-1 after a 0-4 start. Washington QB, usually an afterthought, picked up the slack after Terrell Davis missed the endzone for the first time since week 3. Terry Glenn found the endzone for the first time since week 1. Is there time left for him to overtake JK?

Peil, who lives and dies by the shootout this year, lost another. Small consolation is that he now is the overall BRFL point leader with 414.

18 GTS: BSanders 1, NKauffman 6, EMurray 11
15 BAR: RWatters 1, OMare 6, Philly D 8

Best and Peil are mad about this: 18 is the lowest winning score so far this year. Fred Lane, languishing on Gate's bench could have won this game alone. Lane was probably on the block as quick as Gates moves players in and out. Not now.

Barry is cursing Marcus Allen, who threw a TD pass rather than KC's QBs. However, he should be cursing himself for chosing the wrong QB again. If he is cursing, it is echoing against the walls of the cellar...

34 OUT CIN Q 12, B Emmanuel 13, JKasay 9
32 CJ JAX Q 12, TAllen 2, EGeorge 6, CHawkins 6 JHanson 4, NYJ D 2

O Come, O Come, Emmanuel... It must feel like Christmas for Outlaw. Three striaght wins and an escape from the cellar!

Speaking of Christmas, Jackson has started his shopping. He is continuing to hold WR auditions, but is holding a place open for Jerry Rice, who may be ready, but not until Christmas.

41 CZ Sea Q 18, CMartin 1, C Dillon 8, J Hall 13, NE D 1
11 MOS MStover 10, Sea D 1

The old men, Warren Moon and CZ, continue to show the young whippersnappers how it done. CZ has been a thorn in the side of those at the top. In successive weeks, he has knocked off number 2, Talbot and number 1 MOS.

You have to look deep in to MOS' roster to find any scoring. A season low 11, 10 of which came from his kicker, Matt Stover.

39 BUD BAL Q 6, JBettis 1, LPhillips 6, LSheppard 6, RMoore 6, DAlexander 6, AVinatieri 6, Dal D 2
23 WAL PIT Q 6,CPickens 6, MHollis 9, Det D 2

Deitrich maybe be "BUD LIGHT" this year, but at least he isn't "Rusty Wallace". Bud got a little somethiing from everyone on his line-up. Wallace continues to struggle. Carl Pickens, "Mr November" is showing signs of coming around. Those ready to write off Bob, had better take out a copy of the 1993 BRFL highlight tape...

Week 11

Three weeks to go in the regular season, and only three games separate the first and last place teams. By the way, check out the new Team Archive Pages. When complete these pages will contain the following: Click on the team link below to view the team archive page.

Jones-Klingman vs Ricker

Man, just when you want some one to rise up and knock of big bad trash talking JK, they get Ricker. Can he do it? Green Bay at home against the Rams? We can only hope it is Freeman. All Freeman.

Best vs Talbot

The game Best dreads: facing the QB of is favorite team, Minnesota. Like last year, he faces them against Talbot in week 11. Last year it was a 70-38 loss in what was Brad Johnson's breakthrough game. This year Best comes armed with Cris Carter and new aquistion Moe Williams. Could Talbot loses his fourth straight?

Jackson vs Peil

The battle of a couple inconsistent teams. One week, Jackson looks like he's ready to break out, the next week he's stinking up the joint. Peil, at least scores about the same every week, 41 points, but his opponent scores either a little more or a little less.

Stroupe vs Outlaw

Halfway through the season, this looked like the "toilet bowl", then both of these teams got hot. Oulaw has been playing the spoiler of late and will attempt to derail Stroupe who has won five of six.

Deitrich vs Barry

Barry got some bad news when Elvis Grbac broke his collar bone. The news gets worse this weekend when he faces Bud. Bud is hoping for another Baltimore/Pittsburgh shootout for Vinny and the Bus.

Interesting to note that Barry's Karim Abdul-Jabbar is being sued by Kareem Abdul-Jabbar about his name. What will this lead to? Will Adam Barry be sued by Barry Mosakowski charging that it causes confusion in the league?

Gates vs Mosakowski

CZ and Ricker both put in claims for Fred Lane this week. Neither called Gates to get him in trade as he has had him for several weeks. Mos is looking to rebound and take on JK for first place next week.

Czupryna vs Wallace

Both of these struggling teams are hope for one of those five touchdown games that their QBs are capable of. Wallace's PIT QBs faces the Ravens, where five were scored earlier. CZ's Seattle, travels to SD where offensive numbers can rack up.

Both have dreams of better seasons such as in 1991, in the Super Bowl, CZ's QBs came back to score 5 TDs on a Monday night.
