 Broughton
Patriots
of the American Revolution
It's been called many different
things, but the War for American Independence definitely was
a revolution which put the lives of men on the line. Some of
those men answered the name of BROUGHTON, and their memories
are honored here...
- Willoughby Broughton, was born in Virginia while the state
was still under British rule. He would raise his family there
as well, but during the American Revolution he would fight along
side two of his own sons as Patriots. At the Battle of Moore's
Bridge, in Surry County, North Carolina, Willoughby and his two
sons, Job and Jesse fought against the Tories.
- Job Broughton, a Virginian by birth, was a veteran
of the Revolution. He and his wife were living in Surry County,
North Carolina when he fought in the Battle of Moore's Creek
Bridge against the Tories on February 27, 1776. One year later,
the Broughton couple moved to Wilkes County, Georgia on or around
February 24, 1777 where Job re-entered the service and was stationed
at Stephen Herd's Fort. He would serve until 1781, during which
time he was a Minuteman for a time, a spy for some 18 months,
and participated in the seige of Savannah.
- Jesse Broughton, fought for independence from Britain
in the Revolutionary War. He served beside his father and brother
in the Battle of Moore's Creek Bridge, in Surry County, North
Carolina, on February 27, 1776. He died in 1778, (researchers
believe) possibly due to the war.
