Samuel Broughton & his Union soldiers

Samuel Broughton enlisted in the 5th Indiana Battery (Artillery) along with his brother-in-law, Luman A. Baker, in November 1861 at Whitley County, Indiana. Luman (husband of Annue J. Broughton) died in July 1862 as a result of an illness contracted while in service to the Union. Samuel survived to return to his wife and six children. (He fathered a seventh following the war.)

Samuel's son, Bela Broughton, followed his father's lead and joined the Union forces. Bela served two years in Company F, 13th Indiana Volunteers. Samuel's nephews, Mortimer Broughton and Forbes Broughton, MD, enlisted during the war. Sons of Samuel's brother William Broughton, Mortimer served for three years and Forbes survived the battlefields to turn what he'd learned into a medical practice during the Reconstruction Era. Also worth noting, is that two of Samuel's sons-in-law fought in the war. James Bolton (husband of Lucy A. Broughton) served in Company A of the 21st Wisconsin Infantry. Christopher Simon (husband of Lois Broughton) served in Company K, 44th Regiment, Indiana Volunteer Infantry.
