I.J. Broughton's Children Nancy Jacob Daniel William David H. J. (Henry/Harry) John G. Elizabeth John G. Broughton John G. Broughton, the son of Isaac J. Broughton and his wife Ann, married a Louisiana woman named Willa A. Burnham in 1879 (Index to Lincoln Parish, La Marriages 1873-1936). When the 1880 U. S. Census of Lincoln Parish was taken, Willa was 18-years-old; much younger than John, who was 35. At the time, the couple had a one-month-old son. (The child’s name is unreadable on the census records.) John G.’s occupation was a farmer. Willa was a housewife. 4 The couple lived near his parents during the late 1800’s. Probate records show John even purchased some land together with his father Isaac. On November 23, 1872, John and Isaac purchased from James W. Whisnant some farm animals and two hundred acres of land in what was then called Claiborne Parish for the sum of $890.00. Then on March 4, 1879, John, Isaac and John’s brother H. J. Broughton agreed to purchase a parcel of land in Lincoln Parish, however, the sale fell through and the transaction was cancelled by mutual consent in October 1883. 4 During the Civil War, John G. Broughton joined the Confederate Army. The records filed in the War Department in Washington D.C. indicate J. G. enlisted May 12, 1863 at Jackson, Mississippi and was in Company G, 5th Mississippi Cavalry. But, the last record on file shows he deserted February 15, 1864 at Grenada, Mississippi. For that reason, when John Green Broughton applied for a Confederate pension in 1931, the Louisiana Board of Pension Commissioners denied his request. Children According to U.S. Census records in Louisiana, John G. Broughton and his wife, Willa had at least seven children: John G's Children James C. Walter L. Ida G. Charles J. Cora H. Maud L. Harvey D. John G. Broughton and his family were still living in Hico, Louisiana when his mother died in 1905. Death John G. died in 1932. His succession was filed in Lincoln Parish. He’s buried at Henry Cemetery (established in 1850 on state highway 545 between Hico and Dubach, Louisiana.) His wife Willa died two years later. She is buried beside him and shares a headstone that reads: "BROUGHTON. JOHN G. 1846-1932. WILLA A. 1863-1934. ‘GONE BUT NOT FORGOTTEN.’" Back to Top Elizabeth D. Broughton & Elizabeth D. Broughton ("Babe" as she was called by relatives) married W. B. Singleton in 1892/1893. The year 1893 is noted in a book, "Lincoln Parish, La Marriage Records 1873-1901," compiled by Willie Huffman Farley. It states the two were married August 27, 1893. 4 However, the succession of Elizabeth’s parents, Isaac and Ann, indicates the couple started caring for Ann on Aug. 27, 1892. So, it would appear that Elizabeth was taking care of her mother following Isaac’s death and simply continued to be the care-giver after she married Ben on August 27, 1892. The couple lived in Vienna, a small town in Lincoln Parish Louisiana. 4 Elizabeth’s name appears on several census reports with her parents. Each time, the information about her age varies, but Elizabeth was most likely born in December 1849. On the 1850 census of Randolph County, Alabama, Elizabeth is one year old, which puts her date of birth at about 1849. However, on the 1880 census of Lincoln Parish, La. (30 years later) her age is reportedly 23, which is mathematically impossible! Again in 1900, Elizabeth’s birthday is reported to be December 1855. If she was not born until 1855, then how could her name appear on the Randolph County census in 1850? According to the 1900 US Census, Elizabeth and Ben had a daughter in May of 1887. The name appears to be Dossie, and the age given for the daughter is 13. Interestingly enough, the number of years that Elizabeth and Ben are said to be married (on the same census) is 7. This appears to confirm the marriage date to be 1892, rather than 1893, since the wedding date was in August and the census was taken in June, prior to what would be their 8th anniversary.
