- b. St Petersburg (Russia), 9-25-1906
- d. Moscow (Russia), 8-9-1975
Probably the greatest of the russian composers brought to life after the 1917 Revolution, Dimitri Dimitrievich Shostakovitch suffered the different avatars of the soviet politics along the regime, passing from the glorification of his first years as musician, to the public damnation by the own Josef Stalin. Rehabilitated with the dictator's death om 1953, Shostakovitch stayed on his country until his decease, if always maintained a personal attitude clearly opposed to the manipulation of Arts as part of the soviet system.
