Premiered on New York's Adelphi Theatre, on January the 9th 1947, with the subtitle of "An American Opera", this excellent mixture of Weill's more berliner style with the Broadway sound, is centered on a day's life in a building of apartments in a poor New York neighbourhood. With book from Elmer Rice and lyrics of Langston Hughes, Weill's usual social concern and his terrific handling of the vocal ensembles make this one of his best american scenic works.
