Thomas Newman: AMERICAN BUFFALO / THREESOME

American Buffalo, the first of Thomas Newman's works which this CD shows, and which gives the record its title, has the presence of the great Dustin Hoffman, in an adaptation of prestigious David Mamet's theatrical play, also in charge of the screenplay. Newman's music, in one of that clear examples on which he puts himself completely at image's service, creates a very special environment and maybe the fact that this is a very theatrical movie was a very big influence, so much that in many cues more than music it seems like sound effects, integrating itself with the images more than any other soundtrack, but listen without them may invite for more than one yawn. Threesome is another thing; a typical movie for teenagers, for which Newman has developed melodies, and which goes far away from the experimental music of the previous mentioned film. The suite is very small, but becomes very pleasant and interesting. A.M.
