Jerry Goldsmith: DEEP RISING

It is curious to prove it the different impact that produce the listening of this disk if you are a newcomer to the gender, with a scarce knowledge of the authors and his works, or if the case of a customary listener already expert with the different styles and sounds; the first one would be astonished in front of the sound and rhythmic power of this new work from the perennial Jerry Goldsmith, while the second, without despising it, would discover few interest arguments as compared to other works of his author. And we must not forget the fact that we are talking of Goldsmith, one of the greatest composers of the genre, therefore the exigency is much greater than if this score would be a work of any unknown rookie. The worst of Deep Rising is, again, its excessive use of electronic components, something that was seeming almost forgotten in Goldsmith's last works -see the stupendous The Edge or L.A. Confidential-, together with certain tired touch in the managing of the themes; the best, the force of Underwater Grave, the bartókian remnants of Wall of Water and the warm melody, a trademark, of Leila's Gone. And to wait the next one. M.A.F.
