Graeme Revell: THE SAINT

More than one has been surprised by the strange tone, both in narrative and sound, of a film which, on the paper, invited to a certainly conventional treatment; but The Saint hides, under its appearance of reutilization of a classic TV character, a nice and tender love story in an unreal but, at the same time, strangely beliveable setting. This is not the place to talk about the credibility of a character as the self-named Simon Templar, but it is the place to congratulate ourselves for Graeme Revell's excellent score now available on CD, after a first edition of the unavoidable songs record, thanks to the success of the movie; and part of this success is due to the original and straightful aspect of Revell's music, absolutely far away of a conventional action-movie score, now so common. The symphonic and intensely romantic spirit, created over a beautiful Love Theme which is already possible to hear on the credits sequence (Main Title), and the use (but not abuse) of Edwin Astley's famous television theme on soft sound strokes, are the best support for one of the best scores of this year. Revell does not reject, as common on his music, the combined use of electronic and orchestral sounds, but the achieved balance is fully satisfactory as showed by cues like The Tunnels or Red Square.
