Family History of Morris and Ida Tannenbaum
Morris (Beryl)
Tannenbaum was born in 1868 in Divin, Grodno Province, Russia to Feivel and
Matie Tannenbaum. Morris
married Ida Sarah Nirenbaum (who was born in 1869 in Grodno Province,
Russia) in 1888, also in Grodno. They had eight children - Elze Tannenbaum,
Fanny Tannenbaum, a boy (unknown name who died at age 3), Hannah (Anna)
Tannenbaum, Mary Tannenbaum, Bella Tannenbaum (my Grandmother), May
Tannenbaum and Faye Tannenbaum.
Morris was a farmer. He took Fanny, Hannah and Mary to the
United States in 1915. Ida came to the United States with Bella and May
in 1917 (I think 8/2/17) on the Rotterdam. Morris died in December, 1950
in Brooklyn, NY. Ida died April 20, 1941 in Brooklyn, NY.
The following picture of five Tannenbaum sisters was taken in June, 1960.
(L to R): Mary, Fanny, Bella, Hannah, May
Elze's story is the saddest. She was born in 1889 and married Meyer Blut. She never left Divin. They had two children. Elze, Meyer, their children and their spouses were all killed by the Nazis when Divin (at that time, part of Poland) was invaded. All the residents were asked to dig a pit and lie down in it. They were all shot. I believe this happened sometime in 1940.
Fanny was born in 1893. She married Philip Finglass and five children - Molly Finglass, Mildred Finglass, Lilian Finglass, Sanford Finglass and Jayne Finglass. Fanny died in 1976 in Baltimore, MD.
Hannah (Anna) was born in 1897. She married three times. She had two children with Harry Nademan - May Nademan and Rose Nademan. Hannah died on December 9, 1991 in Fort Lauderdale, FL.
Mary was born in 1900. She married Harry (Rudy) Rudolph in June, 1918 in New York City. Harry Rudolph was a small time gangster associated with Murder, Inc. According to several resources, many considered him 'off his rocker' and did not take him too seriously. In 1940, while in Rikers Island prison on a petty crime, he contacted the Assistant District Attorny describing a murder that had occured in 1934. The DA's office reluctantly questioned the three people that Harry had named and one of them, Abe 'Kid-Twist' Reles, decided to come clean and helped put several big-time gangsters to the electric chair. Mary and Harry had three children - Harold Rudolph, Frieda Rudolph and Loretta Rudolph (who died at the age of 16). Mary died around 1969.
Bella (my Grandmother) was born on February 19, 1902. She met Benjamin Lipshitz while growing up and they married in New York in 1922. They had three children - Mae Lipshitz, Murray Lipshitz (later Lipman) and Leona Lipshitz (my Mother). Bella died on April 9, 1989 in Fair Lawn, NJ. Benjamin Lipshitz died just before I was born on February 7, 1960 in Brooklyn, NY.
Mae married George Schatzman. They had two children - Gary and Marty.
Murray married Marilyn Schwartz. They had two children - Beth and Bonnie.
Leona married Stanley Shafer on November 30, 1957. They had two sons - Barry (me, born in 1960) and Steven (born, 1964). Stan and Lee live in Fair Lawn, NJ.
May was born on July 15, 1907. She married Joseph Kramer in 1926 in Brooklyn, NY. Joseph died in 1936 and May married Dave Papir (later Peiper) on July, 21, 1939. They had two children - Arthur Peiper and Susan Peiper. May and Dave are still alive and live in Miami Beach, FL.
Faye, the youngest, was the only Tannenbaum child born in the United States. She was born on May 16, 1918. She married Herbert (Sonny) Hartzman on December 24, 1938 in New York City. They had two children - Carl Hartzman and Irene Hartzman. Faye lives with Irene (Voit) and her family in Utah.
