Seventh Generation (Continued)

Family of George B. Buckalew (199) & Sarah Purdy

555. John Jackson Buckalew. Born on 5 April 1835 in Coshocton Co., OH. John Jackson died in Bryan, Williams Co., OH, on 17 October 1927; he was 92. Buried in Fountain Grove Cem., Bryan, Willliams Co., OH.

"... talked much of his days as a Civil War veteran. In one battle, he heard a shell and sprawled forwards upon the ground. A dead Confederate soldier landed on top of him. At the end of the battle, the Confederates (who won battle) ended the suffering of the wounded with their bayonnets. Compared to gangrene, this was a merciful thing to do. John Jackson was spared because of the dead man on top of him.

"Towaqrd the end of the war, he worked with prisoner exchange. The stenchnof rotting wounded was too much for him. The government gave him land by Witchita, Kansas, as payment at the end of the way. He moved out there with his 1st wife. She died there after only 4 years.

"He later remarried to Adelia Bostater. They had two children, my Grand-father Andrew and John. The record shows Adelia to be of Coschocton. My father can remember when his day was the executor of the Bostater estate. He claims her parents were of Defiance County. It is a myster how John Jackson got from Coshocton to Defiance. For a time he worked at the courthouse with land deeds. John Jackson became a very wealthy man by buying and selling lands. ThemWilliams Co. history mentions several settlers' cemetaries and one room school houses which fell victim to his land 'improvements.' He once owned all of the building on the south side of Bryon, Ohio's courthouse square. Also had interest in the Bryon gas wells. Interesting story--Rockefellers offered to buy gas company. People in Bryon refused. One morning found gas wells capped with concrete.

"John Jackson also made much money loaning money. When he was in his eighties, he loaned the Methodist Church in Bryon money for a new building. The attorney told my Grandfather that the Preacher was spending his inheritance. John Jackson lived long enough for repayment of this loan!" Letter from John Bucklew, 21 June 1999.

Most of the information about the descendents of Catherine and James, particularly in regard to to the Reed and Gamertsfelder familes, was found in Part Two of  "We Would Remember" by Nadine M. Getz, published in 1950 by The Otterbein Press, Dayton, Ohio. Upon examination of this work, one finds Bucklews intermarried with Mullets multiple times in different generations. Both my grandmother's and mother's copies were heavily noted with updates and additional dates since then, so information available subsequent to Getz's comes from my records, which were inherited from my grandmother, Great-Aunt Nellie Neldon and mother, as does information about parentage of spouses in my direct line. My father's family remained close to the Nellie Grace Bucklew's Myers branch of the family, so my mother had made notes about many of the personal details of these relatives. (Jane Hutt)
