From Sharon Perdue: "On a piece of yellowed paper found in a book belonging to Ollie Bean Wisecarver, the following account was written: Written by Garrett Bean -- I was born in Christian County Kentucky, February 16th, 1807. My parents in company with 7 or 8 other families started west for missouri in the summer of 1808 among whom were my uncles and grandparents on my mother's side, all of who were poor in the things of this world for they all together were able to fit out only one wagon. It was drawn by four horses. They crossed the Mississippi in the southern part of Illinois. A portion of their effects had to be transported by pack horses. They settled in St. Charles County, Missouri, which, at that time, was an almost unbroken wilderness. In September, 1809, my father sickened and died and left my mother with 3 little children in very destitute circumstances. My brother William was born about two months after my father's death. In due course of time, she was married to Andrew Edwards. We lived in Pike County, Missouri, until December 1811 when there was a family murdered by the Indians."
