I am writing to you to give you an update on my research on the Mary Ann Buckallew (1826 - ?) daughter of James Buckellew (11 Oct 1802 - 10 Nov 1877).

In a September 23, 1987 article from the Dugger Post (Dugger, Sullivan County, Indiana) a local history from circa 1939 was presented. The article includes an interview which was conducted with my great great uncle, William Thomas Wilson (1856 -1940). In the article he states that he is the son of Henry Wilson and Mary Ann Buckellew, daughter of James Buckellew of Clay County, Indiana. He also states that Mary Ann Buckelew was a Quaker.

In the 1850 Federal Census of Lewis Twp, Clay County, IN Mary Braden, age 21, is living with James Buckalew, age 49, and Mahala K, age 43, as well as with William J., age 21, and Joel A,, age 16. J.D. Wilson

Mary Ann first married Henry Wilson. Born about 1815 in TN. Henry died in Sullivan Co., IN, after June 1880; he was 65.

1850 US census, Dist# 105, Jackson Twp, Sullivan Co., IN.

HISTORY OF WILSONVILLE. ...a most interesting history of the settlement called Wilsonville, as given the author by Tom Wilson.
Wilsonville is located a little north and east of Mine No. 46 about three fourths of a mile. The community was given its after Tom Wilson and his father, Henry Wilson.

Tom is 83 years of age [William Thomas Wilson was born in 1856 -this article was, therefore, written circa 1938 or 1939, one or two years before Tom died...

Tom Wilson's father was Henry Wilson from Tennessee. His mother was Mary Ann Buckalew Wilson, daughter of James Buckalew of Clay County.

[Les Buckalew's note: This is very interesting because it tends to confirm the Native American link for this family. There is strong evidence that one or both of Mary Ann Buckallew/Buckellew's Holt grandparents had considerable Native American blood. Look at the record of Mary Ann's mother's sister, Rachel (Holt) Buckloo.]

Henry Wilson had quite a lot of Indian blood in his veins, and his appearance would have amused most of us today. He had long hair which hung down to his shoulders in long curls. However, this style of tonsure was typical of pioneer days.

Henry Wilson secured 240 acres of land from the government for $1.35 per acre. Even with all this land, he bought corn every year, as he liked to hunt better than to farm.

He was an expert hunter, having spent much of his time in the woods. Tom Wilson recalls his mother sending the boys to the woods after their father to bring him home for meals. Often they would find him asleep under a tree.

They had the following children:
3069 i. Sarah E. (1850-)
3070 ii. James Minnich (1853-1901)
3071 iii. William Thomas (1855-1940)
3072 iv. Harriett (1858-<1870)
3073 v. Mary C. (1860-)
3074 vi. Marshall A. (1862-)
3075 vii. Haly (1862-)
3076 viii. Henretta (1870-)
3077 ix. Elizabeth Alice (1864-1950)

Mary Ann second married Braden. Born about 1826.

1630. Joel A. Holt Buckalew. Born on 21 November 1833 in near Middlebury, Harrison Twnsp, Clay Co., IN.

Biographical sketch from History of Clay Co., Ind., 1909:
"Joel H. Buckallew, native of Clay County, Indiana, born near Middlebury, Harrison township, November 21, 1833, was brought up on the farm in Lewis township, where he acquired a meager education in the log-cabin schools of that time. On the 19th day of December, 1854, he married Miss Isabel Cooprider, of Middlebury, who was born October 9, 1835; resided in Lewis township until the 4th day of January, 1862, when he enlisted in the service of the government, returning home after the close of the war (Civil), July 19, 1865. In 1866 he engaged in merchandising at Middlebury for the period of about four years. In the fall of 1878 he moved to Missouri, having traded his Middlebury property for a farm near Butler, Bates county, where he still resides. The Buckallew and Cooprider families were among the hardiest and best of the very early pioneers of the south end of the county."
