Tenth Generation (Continued)

Family of Mary Ann Buckalew (2898) & George W. Ezekiel

4925. Richard Champion Ezekiel. Born about 1875.

4926. Aaron Eldon Ezekiel. Born about 1878 in AL. Aaron Eldon died in 1947; he was 69. Occupation: Coal Miner.

The initial information about the marriage and descendants of Aaron E. Ezekiel was provided by Jennifer Williams. Jennifer left a note in the guestbook of my website, and the following was my reply to that note:

"It was interesting to hear from you today in the message that you left in the guestbook at 1:42:05am, in which you wrote: "I'm searching for any information on my great-grandmother, Elizabeth (Buckalew) Ezekiel married to an Aaron Ezekiel. It is almost certain that they emmigrated to the U.S. via Mexico (Aaron Ezekiel owned land there which he lost during the Mexican Revolution at the turn of the century). I believe she would've been born around the 1880's or 1890's. She gave birth to my grandma (Pauline Marie Ezekiel Cordray) in 1910. I believe Buckalew is the correct spelling. .."

"At the end of this email I'm appending a 3 generation register report of the descendants of Richard C. Buckelew, in which there is one Aaron E. Ezekiel. I have no information of Aaron's spouse or descendants. I have 104 Buck?lew girls in my file whose first or middle names are "Elizabeth."

"If your Elizabeth Buckalew was Aaron's wife, it's also possible that she was a relative-- perhaps a niece --of Aaron's mother. In this generation it was not at all unusual for cousins to marry one another. There was also a great use of nicknames, which often makes identification quite difficult. Too, when we only have one given name, that is, first or middle name, this may hinder identification.

"One further consideration is that your Elizabeth may have been a "Buckalew" by a previous marriage, not by birth.

"Do you have the name of any of Elizabeths siblings?

"Let me know what you think about all this and I'll keep trying.

" Cousinly regards,
Les :o)"

My deepest thanks for this information. One of my Aunts said that this Aaron Ezekiel could be the right one. She indicated that my grandmother, Pauline Marie (Ezekiel) Cordray, made one trip with her mother by train to Birmingham, Alabama when she was a girl. Apparently, they were going to see her mother's relatives. This was the only time my grandmother saw her
Alabama family.

I pulled records for the 1910 Census, Daw Township, Pittsburg Co., OK. There is an Aaron Ezekiel listed as age 31. This would fit with the 1878 date that you have, if his birthday fell after May 2nd (the day this census was done in 1910). His wife was Lizze, 30, and they had 5 children at the time (although she had given birth to 10). Lizzie would have been about 4 months pregnant with my grandmother. Both her and Aaron were from AL. I re-created this Census sheet in Excel, as it is much easier to read than the original. I have set up the header and footer, and it should be printed on legal size paper. If you don't want to print it, you can take a look in print preview for more details. I have attached a copy.

In telling all of this to my mother, she says that she doesn't think that Grandma's mother was a Buckalew. She said that on the death certificate (maybe they ask for Mother's Maiden Name), it says a last name that starts with a "C" or "Ca". It may be that Aaron Ezekiel never married a Buckalew. I will obtain a copy and keep you posted for your records.

Of course, all of this opens many questions for me. We have always suspected that Aaron Ezekiel was Jewish. Is there anything known of George W. Ezekiel's faith or where he may have come from? Also, we find it puzzling that Aaron would have owned land in Mexico if he had not emmigrated through there. I can't imagine a Coal Miner made enough money to purchase land in another country. I really have alot of work to do. Please let me know if you need anything else from me for your records, as I will be doing much of the legwork anyway. I am so happy I found your site! Thanks again. Jennifer

Dear Sir:
I am writing in reference to the Ezekiel family in your family tree (1853-?). I have a death certificate for my late father-in-law which states his parents as Aaron Eldon Ezekiel and Elizabeth Cattell. He and his brothers and sisters were Nellie, William, Effie, Patrick, Damon, Pauline, Eugene, and Hershel.

In searching for Aaron's ancestors, I found your great website some time ago, but I couldn't find a connection because his funeral papers said he was born June 3, 1872. Recently I discovered the 1910 census listed his age as 31, and the 1930 census said he was 59. At the time of his death in 1947, Aaron had 2 surviving sisters, Anna Simpson, of Sapulpa, OK, and Emma Townsend, of Carbon Hill, Ala., who must have been born after 1880. When I read the insert from Jennifer Williams stating the confusion about her Buckalew ancestor, I realized it must be the same Aaron.

I have a few more dates and more info if you are interested. I would appreciate hearing from you. My e-mail address is dljse@cwis.net Thanks for your time. Dixie Ezekiel
