Much of the information about descendants of Pearley (Purl?) Lee Buckalew was received initially from Stanly Wayne Buckalew.
Lived at one time in Forsythe, MT.
The following notes were given to Stanly Wayne Buckalew by Lillian Agate (Coole) Buckalew on 1 Jan 2000:
Purl and Maude (Werner) Buckalew were both born in Adair County, MO and were married there in 1902. Purl had attended Normal School in Kirksville, MO. They farmed in MO until 1914 when they moved to Montana and homesteaded about 15 miles Northwest of Forsyth, MT. Purl then went to work on the section crew of the Milwaukee railroad, leaving Maude and the family of five children to take care of the homestead.
Zelona was a year and a half old when they moved to Montana. Paul was the first child of this family to be born in Montana, in 1916. Elmer was also born on the homestead . Lee was born in Forsyth.
This family endured many hardships out on the homestead. One son, Purl, died of infantile paralysis (polio) not too long after they came to MT.
Maude's parents, Fred and Alice Werner, and her two sisters and their husbands, Bessie & Art Kohlmyer, and Susie & Dexter (Tom) Taylor also came to MT about the same time. They also homesteaded closer to Myers, MT on the North side of the Yellowstone River. Mary Alice Werner's parents, Elias and Susan Millison also accompanied them. Mr. Millison died and was buried in a cemetery close to the Yellowstone river. During high water one year, a long time ago, this cemetery washed out. I don't know how many of the dead were salvaged and re buried, or if any were at all. That was long before I was born. Eventually the Taylors, the Werners, and Mrs. Millison moved to California. The Koylmyers' homesteaded up on the South side of the Yellowstone River, up on Reservation Creek. I don't know just where at though.
The Buckalews eventually moved to Forsyth, MT about 1923. Purl went to work for the Northern Pacific railroad. He lit the lamps (at that time they used lamps) in the switchyard. He also took care of the two big beautiful lawns on the South side of Main Street on the 8th & 9th blocks. He worked there until retirement about the late forties. Grandad (Purl) never talked much about his life, so we don't know a whole lot there. He did have a broom making machine , and he made brooms which he strapped on his back and went door to door selling them.
Maude worked for many years as a night cook in the "Elks Cafe" in Forsyth for Martha Kaufman on the night shift (11:00PM to 08:00AM). She not only did the orders that came in, she was also the pastry cook, making all the pies, doughnuts, rolls, etc.. She also washed the laundry (at that time they used cloth tablecloths & napkins). She also washed the dishes, scrubbed the kitchen floor and made all of the soap for dish washing and laundry, all in her "spare" time. She would go home and sleep for a few hours, and then get up and start weaving rugs made from rags. She charged $1.50 for a rug 45"x24". She did all the work, but the customer provided the rags. She retired in the early 1950's.
Purl died in Feb. 1954 in Glendive, MT. in the Northern Pacific R.R. Hospital. He had prostate cancer. Maude died May 6, 1967 in Wolf Point, MT., where she had gone to live with her daughter Zelona. Maude had been an invalid for about 12 years previous to her death due to her having a stroke. She suffered another one or two a month before being hospitalized, and dying. Stroke was the cause of her death.
In 1902 when Pearley Lee was 21, he married Maude Josephine Werner, daughter of Fredrick Werner (3 September 1857-January 1939) & Mary Alice Millison (17 October 1863-1950), in Kirksville, MO. Born on 18 November 1883 in Kirksville; Adair Co., MO. Maude Josephine died in Wolf Point, MT, in 1967; she was 83. Buried in Forsyth Cemetery, Forsyth; Rosebud Co., MT.
Mistake on her tombstone lists her middle name as Elizabeth.
They had the following children:
5208. Nellie M. Buckalew. Born in July 1882 in Adair, MO. Nellie M. died in 1948; she was 65. Buried in Highland Park Cem.; Adair Co., MO.
