A software component that enables a computer to communicate with a device. In most cases, the driver also manipulates the hardware in order to transmit the data to the device. However, device drivers associated with programs typically perform only the data translation; these higher-level drivers then rely on lower-level drivers to actually send the data to the device. Many devices, such as video adapters, do not work properly--or at all--without the correct device drivers installed on the computer.
Where Can I Obtain Device Drivers?
Windows Update
If you are using Microsoft Windows 98, the Microsoft Windows Update Web http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/ site has an automated tool that helps you determine if you need updated device driver files.
Your Hardware Manufacturer
Since a device driver is designed specifically for both the hardware and the operating system, you should obtain device drivers from your hardware manufacturer. If you know the manufacturer of your device, search the Internet to see if that manufacturer has a Web site.
The Hardware Compatibility List
The Microsoft Windows Hardware Quality Labs (WHQL) work with hardware
manufacturers to ensure device drivers are tested to be compatible with
Windows. The Hardware Compatibility List (HCL) contains all of the hardware
that passes this testing. Some HCL devices contain drivers on the WHQL
Web site.
