How to Disable Advanced Power Management
There are several ways to disable Advanced Power Management, but the best way is to disable it in your computer's BIOS. Consult the documentation included with your computer for information about how to disable Advanced Power Management in the BIOS.
To disable Advanced Power Management settings in Windows
1.Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.
2.Double-click Power Management.
3.In the System standby box, click Never.
4.In the Turn off hard disks box, click Never.
5.Click Apply, and then click OK.
Note
Disabling the Advanced Power Management settings in Windows may not
completely disable all Advanced Power Management features. A BIOS may have
settings that Windows cannot override. For the best results, Microsoft
recommends that you disable Advanced Power Management in the BIOS.
If Advanced Power Management support is not detected in Windows, the only settings that appear on the Power Schemes tab in the Power Management tool are Turn off hard disks and Turn off monitor.
To determine if Advanced Power Management support is detected in Windows
1.Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.
2.Double-click System.
3.Click the Device Manager tab.
4.Double-click the System devices branch to expand it.
Is Advanced Power Management listed?
Your computer may not support APM
To determine if Advanced Power Management (APM) is configured correctly, check the status of APM in Device Manager
1.Click Start, point to Settings, click Control Panel, and then double-click
System.
2.Click the Device Manager tab, and then double-click the System Devices
branch to expand it.
If a red X appears to the left of Advanced Power Management
1.Click Advanced Power Management, and then click Properties.
2.Click Enable Device, click OK, and then click OK again.
3.Restart your computer
If an exclamation point in a yellow circle appears to the left of Advanced
Power Management, verify that Advanced Power Management is enable in your
computer's BIOS. For information about how to enable Advanced Power Management
in your computer's BIOS, consult your computer's documentation or manufacturer.
Some drivers do not handle Power Management correctly. Your computer may start to resume, and then stop responding (hang). When this occurs, a flashing cursor may appear in the upper-left corner of the screen.
If you are using a computer from a well-known manufacturer, contact the manufacturer to inquire about an updated driver or BIOS to address this issue.
